Mark Finkelstein breaks down consistency to its core: stance, shooting system, and a repeatable way of evaluating angle, speed, and spin. Repeat it until it's automatic. Automatic means no pressure.
The mental shift that changes everything: you don't control winning. You don't control the ball going in. You control where you stand, your stroke, and your breathing. That's it. Focus only on what you control and confidence follows naturally. Being process-oriented isn't just good advice. It's the entire foundation of consistent pool.

Be honest: Which one is your practice session? πŸ˜…
A: Rack 'em, break 'em, try to run out.
B: Structured drills, one skill per session.

Bob Keller (Ep. 9) says 99% of amateurs practice one of these ways, and he has strong feelings about which one actually builds your game.

Mark Finkelstein on slumps: players who can't figure out what's wrong with their game almost always share one thing in common. They don't have a system.
When you have a shooting system and a routine, missing a shot or going through a rough stretch has an immediate answer: go back to the system. Check the fundamentals. You can solve the problem in the same game. You don't need weeks of "I can't play, I don't know what's wrong." Miss a shot, identify what broke down in the system, and return to it. The answer to every slump is already in the routine.

This one takes 30 seconds and might explain years of missed shots πŸ‘€
Kim Young "The Dragon" (ep 4) uses this stance check with his students: if your tip lands off the cue ball, he says it's like driving with half the air out of the tires on one side. You CAN get where you're going, but you're steering the whole way.

Myth or fact? 🎱 "The further you follow through, the more spin you get." Almost every player has been told this at some point. Some swear by it, some say the physics tells a different story. We're not giving our verdict, we want yours.

Mark Finkelstein on the mental game most players skip: self-talk, a breathing plan, and visualization are non-negotiable for consistent performance.
Watch good players before they shoot. They stand there and actually feel the shot. The stick moves slightly. They're running through the ex*****on before it happens. That mental rehearsal gives the game the precision it demands. Most players just dive into the shot and rush to the next one without ever feeling what they're about to do. Slow down. Stand there. Feel it first.

Cue the Experts S3 Ep 01 - Mark Finkelstein: A Three-Cent Stroke Is a Three-Cent Game

Mark Finkelstein was five years old when his father started taking him to a second floor pool room in Rockaway Beach, two subway stops from Aqueduct Racetrack. The best straight pool players in New York killed time on those tables before heading to the track, and Mark caught the bug watching men run fifty balls without ever hitting anything hard. Seventy years later he's a PBIA Master Instructor, winner of the 2020 Jerry Briesath Award, and the guy other instructors take clinics from. We discuss why a three cent stroke ruins a million dollar aiming system, where your feet actually go, the notebook exercise that exposes what you say to yourself, why he makes students play without chalk, and how to build a year long plan that peaks when it matters.

Book a lesson at Cue Master Pool School (https://www.cuemaster-poolschool.com), email Mark directly at [email protected], or find Pool Ramblings on Amazon.

Bob Keller pushes back on one of the most commonly repeated beginner tips: it doesn't matter how you stand or hold your cue, just do it the same way every time and you'll be okay.

He calls it terrible advice. And he's right. Consistently repeating poor mechanics doesn't lead to improvement, it locks in bad habits at a low ceiling. Fundamentals matter. How you stand affects your alignment. How you hold the cue affects your stroke. Doing something consistently wrong just means you get consistently mediocre. Get the fundamentals right first, then make them consistent.
