Absolutely stunning photo pass of the legendary Grumman HU-16 Albatross lighting up the ramp at the TBM Avenger Reunion Airshow in Peru, Illinois! While the TBM Avengers are the undisputed stars of the weekend, this giant amphibious beauty completely stole the show during its flyby.
Nothing quite beats the rumbling symphony of those twin Wright radial engines echoing across the airfield.
⚓ Grumman HU-16 Albatross Quick Facts:
The Mission: Originally designed in 1944 to replace the Grumman Goose, the Albatross served as the ultimate search-and-rescue (SAR) workhorse for the USAF, Navy, and Coast Guard through the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Open Sea Survivor: Built with a deep-V hull cross-section, it was engineered to land in rough 4-foot open ocean seas, and could even blast off out of 8-to-10-foot swells using JATO (Jet-Assisted Take-Off) rockets.
Korean War Lifeline: During the Korean War alone, Albatross crews rescued nearly 1,000 United Nations personnel from coastal waters and rivers—frequently pulling off daring saves right behind enemy lines.
The Powerplant: It relies on two massive Wright R-1820-76A Cyclone 9-cylinder radial engines, pumping out 1,425 horsepower each.
Globetrotter: With a massive range of 2,850 miles, a modified Albatross actually completed a full round-the-world flight itinerary in 1997.
Shoutout to the organizers of the TBM Reunion for pulling together another world-class gathering of vintage iron and keeping these multi-era veterans flying high!
