Had a spammer using my clients' contact forms to pitch website redesigns. Same message, two different clients, same sender.

I sent her a thank you email. She gave me the idea to build a proper spam filter into my mail system, something I'd been meaning to get to for a while.

Then I did what I always do. I checked her site.

No meta description. No schema markup at all. Twenty five images on the homepage, zero with alt text, which isn't just a missed SEO opportunity, it's an accessibility failure. A visitor using a screen reader gets nothing.

She's selling website improvements to other businesses. Her own homepage doesn't have the basics.

I see this constantly. It's not that these people are bad at everything. They're good at selling. But they're selling a service they've never applied to themselves.

Check the site before you trust the pitch. It usually tells you everything the sales message won't.

I walked into a bakery in downtown Radford and the individual cupcakes stopped me first. Delicate floral work, so precise it looked hand painted.

Then she showed me one of her cupcake bouquets. Dozens of those same cupcakes arranged together. I was stunned.

She had been through multiple website builders before we met. None of them ever got it right.

I knew before we talked that her website had to be as meticulous as her cakes.

What happens when a website tries to match the quality of the work behind it?

Ana builds cupcake bouquets so precise they look like florist arrangements. After other website builders never got it right, I built her a custom website in Radford, VA with a dynamic photo gallery, a detailed contact form, and an admin panel she runs herself. No templates.

Ask your current web developer what their standards are. If they can't articulate them, that might be because they don't have any.

I audited a freight carrier's website and sent them the findings. Documented problems, specific fixes to solve problems they don't see.

The general manager forwarded it to his website team to see if my email "carried weight."

Their expert said the site was fine. Good enough.

So I audited the expert's website.

Every single page missing meta descriptions. A bad canonical tag on their homepage. And a misspelled word on their thank you page.

In The Field 013 is live. Sometimes the expert gets the last word. Sometimes the crawl report does.

An audit revealed orphaned application pages and missing meta tags on a carrier's site. Their "expert" said it was fine. Here is what "good enough" costs.

I have developed a tool that I am still testing that will crawl websites and tell you issues with your site's structure. I know the first thing you want to try is testing my own site. There is a loopback that I am trying to get working before it can do that, but every site I am not hosting works nicely. It does have a 150 page limit so don't try to test google.com

If you have issues, let me know. It is a work in progress, but it is finding issues a many sites I check every day.

Are you paying $100, $400, or even more for "managed hosting"?

You should find out what you are paying for instead of sending a check every month and hoping for the best. One of my latest clients was doing that, and their website domain was lost.

Stop paying for indifference hosting. If you pay $100+/mo for a website, find out what actual hosting costs and what real, active management looks like.

I walked into an auto shop last week and pulled up their website.

It was a Chinese gasket manufacturer.

The business had been paying someone $100 a month to manage their digital presence. That vendor let the domain expire. Someone in Chengdu picked it up. Every customer who typed in the business name landed on a page in Mandarin.

The invoice kept going out. Nobody was watching.

This is not a technology problem. It is an accountability problem. A monthly fee is not evidence that work happened.

It is evidence that someone sent a bill.

If you are paying for managed hosting or website maintenance, ask what you are actually getting for that money. If the answer is vague, that is your answer.
