Shared Minds Training

Shared Minds Training My name is Maia Edwards, and I love training horses.

I have been riding horses since I was nine years old and have done everything from eventing, hunter/jumper, some western pleasure, some gaming, and trained a mustang.

After a year being leased out, I finally got Rhodie back! It’s nice having my other half back so we can become a team again. Hopped on after giving him a few days to settle in to the new barn to see where he was at physically. There had been mention about him being lame, so I took my time. I hand walked him to make sure I didn’t see any major issues there, then moved on to a short lunge in both directions to see if he was sound. After evaluating and noting that he was indeed sound, I got on and took a short ride to see how he felt. And he was great! A part from him being stiff (which has always been an issue, and I have exercised to help with) he was pretty much the horse that I sent off to be leased. What an amazing feeling! I’m so excited to see where this year takes us!

Throwback to c**t starting! It was such a fun and informational clinic to be a part of. Learned so much that has influenced my training, even when I’m not working with a horse that’s learning how to take a saddle and rider.

So if anyone is wondering where Cayman and I have come on our journey so far, since I never post anything, we are currently on our way to Colorado to attend an Anna Twinney c**t starting clinic. I have yet to successfully place a saddle on her without her broncing, so I am really looking forward to this clinic. There is so much that we can both learn, and I am excited to see how this will effect the way we work together!

Alright so I'm guessing everyone wants an update on Cayman. Because who wouldn't? ;) She has come so far since our show this summer. When I saddle her she still broncs but now I can get her to walk in it after a while, as shown in the video and pictures below. She has a hip thing but we talked to the vet and they said that it looks like the worst thing but it is absolutely nothing. If anyone is wondering what I am talking about I can tell you in the comments. She lays down now too! So exciting!

Today we went to a different arena and practiced for our freestyle. And while I wont give you specifics, I will tell you that Cayman did pretty well and that we are READY for Friday. She listened to me and when she decided she didn't want to do something, it only took a minute to bring her back to earth.

Day 120 -

Today we had a fun day. After I went shopping for Cayman and really all the ponies I work with, I tried on her new sleazy. She looks adorable in it. Then we went down to the arena and just hung out for a bit. We worked a little on pivots and circles, but not much. These are the days I have the most fun with because they really allow me to bond with whatever horse I'm working with and are just fun in general. I also worked on me just standing on the block because when I did this a couple days ago she was really scared but she had no problem today. I really do love this pony. ❤️

Day 119 -

Today we worked on showmanship things again. I really want to work on getting her solid on all those types of things. We also had a fun day. I tried to let her run around, but she didn't want to. She trotted for about a half of a lap and then turned back to me. This little mare has taught me so many unbelievable things and every day she continues to teach me something new.

Today I spent an hour on showmanship with Cayman. I really pushed her on stopping RIGHT with me, no matter the gait. She did forget at the beginning but after a while she remembered and was really good! I also worked on backing in a straight line. This has been the one thing we have consistently struggled with this whole time, so I try to work on it often. I also brought up pivots again and she did really well! And then we also worked on when to start side passing. That also took her a while - more so on her left side than her right side. After a bit she made progress and that's where I ended the session today.
