Had a great time at the opening of the "Canyon Country" show at the Cortez Cultural Center in Cortez Colorado. Everyone was so welcoming to this first-timer! I met some some wonderful artists from the region and saw some amazing art. If you're in the area, check this place out!

Here are some process shots of a work in progress, starting with the first sketch, literally on a post-it note. These sandstone spires are near a remarkable petroglyph site, and I wouldn't be surprised if these rocks are at least part of the reason for the location of the rock art.

Just completed 8"x10" of a juniper tree. I'm amazed how these trees can survive in Just a few inches of sandy soil. They're ultimate survivors, yet they can look tortured. Title: "Under a Sky of Azure".

Thinking this one is finished, but I'll let it rest for a few days before I add a signature. This view of Huerfano Mesa, (aka Dzilth-na-o-dith-hle to the Diné) is from a segment of what's known as the ancient Great North Road between Chaco Canyon and Kutz Canyon, near Bloomfield, NM. I feel very lucky to be able to walk in this special landscape.

I think the very beginning of a painting is the most challenging yet rewarding part. If the beginning is good, the rest usually goes more smoothly. This initial phase also let's me use both my fine art and graphic design skills, such as they are!

Very close to being done with this one! This mesa is situated near the terminus of the ancient "Great North Road" that begins at Chaco Canyon. It's important in the creation stories of the Navajo people, and must also be a landmark for Pueblo people, though I am not familiar with those stories. I'm just fortunate to get to see it on a regular basis.

Continued progress on this new 18"x24" canvas.

Making a little progress on this one. This mesa is a sacred site to the Diné people of the Four Corners. I'm trying get at least a tiny bit of that feeling into the paint.
