Move Itasca was created as part of a Girl Scout Gold Award project, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The initiative focuses on raising awareness of the powerful connection between physical fitness and mental wellness, while encouraging people of all ages to make movement a part of a healthier lifestyle.

It was an honor to partner on a project with such a meaningful mission. Congratulations to Zoe Malmquist for turning an inspiring vision into a resource that can make a positive impact throughout the community.

🚀 Another custom website is officially live!

I'm excited to announce the launch of coHaus Collective's new website:

This project was much more than a website. It includes a fully custom reservation system built specifically around coHaus's workflow—not a plug-in or off-the-shelf booking platform.

Behind the scenes is a powerful administrative system that gives the coHaus team the tools they need to efficiently manage reservations, review requests, organize bookings, and keep their spaces running smoothly. The goal was to create an experience that's just as intuitive for the staff as it is for the people making reservations.

Every business operates differently, and sometimes the best solution is software that's built around your business—not the other way around.

Launching a big one today.

When I first got into web development, there weren't endless platforms, subscriptions, or drag-and-drop builders. There wasn't a cookie-cutter solution for every problem. There were developers who knew how to write code, build HTML, and create something entirely new.

Every project started with a blank page.

Those early years were some of the most exciting of my career. I helped build one of Best Buy's original e-commerce systems. I created a CD tracking application that caught AOL's attention. That project led to a targeted coupon platform, where I also learned an unforgettable lesson about why handshake deals aren't always enough. I built a website for Northland Connection that pulled together more than 100 data tables—from electrical infrastructure to regional climate statistics. Every project challenged us to solve problems that had never been solved before.

It truly was the Wild West of the web.

As the industry matured, everything began to standardize. CMS platforms, CRMs, e-commerce systems, and countless SaaS products transformed how software was built. It made perfect business sense. Why spend thousands of development hours building something from scratch when you could buy a proven solution?

The tradeoff was that your vision often had to fit the software instead of the software fitting your vision. For the better part of two decades, that was the right compromise.

Today, I believe we're entering another major shift.

AI-assisted software development is changing the economics of custom software. Suddenly, it's practical again to build systems around your business instead of forcing your business into someone else's system. Architects and developers can move faster than ever, creating solutions that are tailored, innovative, and capable of pushing boundaries once again.

I think we're returning to an era where originality matters. Where unique experiences outperform cookie-cutter platforms. Where custom solutions become a competitive advantage instead of a luxury.

As someone who started in that first era of the web, it's incredibly exciting to watch the industry come full circle.

And today, I'm proud to launch something that embraces exactly that future.

Today I discovered an issue on one of my own websites that was hurting its visibility on Google.

The site displayed a loading screen while waiting for an API call to return content. In some cases, Google would only see that loading screen—not the actual page—meaning valuable content wasn't being indexed. A fix is already in the works, and it should significantly improve search visibility.

This is a perfect example of why launching a website is only the beginning.

Too many businesses invest in a beautiful website, point a domain at it, and never touch it again. That's like printing thousands of business cards... then leaving them stacked on your desk. The potential is there, but it isn't reaching the people who need to see it.

Search engines evolve. AI changes how people discover businesses. Browsers, devices, and technologies are constantly changing. Without ongoing monitoring and maintenance, your website can slowly lose visibility without you even realizing it.
