2014-2015 Event Programs
September 4 – Joint Archives of Holland Tour
The Joint Archives of Holland, a department of Hope College, promotes the educational mission of Hope College and its partner institutions by actively collecting, caring for, interpreting, and making available the unique historical resources in its care. These resources include the archival collections of Hope College, Western Theological Seminary, area governmental units, and other members who may contract for services at the Joint Archives of Holland. It serves as a history research center for students, faculty and staff of Hope College, for contractual members of the Joint Archives of Holland, and for the general public. October 2 – Cyber Security Incidents, B.J. Ash @ Kent Records Management. With multiple reports of people’s personal information being stolen from major companies in the last year, it seems cyber security is more important than ever. On July 23rd, the West Michigan Cyber Security Consortium and Michigan Cyber Civilian Corps participated in an event at Davenport University designed to fine tune critical Internet skills in case of a cyber-attack. The Consortium provided several IT volunteers to test their skills in this exercise with the Cyber Civilian Corps, which was created by the governor to respond to cyber terrorism in the state. One team did the cyber attacking, and the other team tried to stop the breach. In this talk, we will discuss the methods used by both teams, lessons learned, and how you can use this knowledge to help formulate a better cyber security plan for your company. November 6 – Preservica: Michigan’s First Digital Preservation System, State Archivist Mark Harvey @ Amway
The Archives of Michigan deployed Preservica in 2012 becoming the first state in the county to subscribe to an OAIS and ISO compliant, cloud-based subscription service. Join us to learn about the features of the Preservica system, the history of digital preservation at the Archives of Michigan and the Archives future implementation plans for the service. December 4 – No Monthly Meeting
Wishing you a safe and wonderful holiday season! – West Michigan ARMA Board of Directors
January 8 – You Used to Work Here: Managing the Impact of Employee Separation on RIM Programs, William LeFevre, CA, CRM @ CU Answers
Death, downsizing, retirements, mergers, acquisitions…organizations lose employees for many reasons. Yet most organizations deal very poorly with the RIM aspects of employee separation. ARMA Detroit Education Director William LeFevre will explore how to build an effective RIM component into the employee exit process at your organization, including model RIM policies and procedures for employee separations. Legal ramifications of separations on RIM programs and risk analysis and assessment will draw from real-world scenarios. February 5 – Disaster Recovery Plan, Shelly Stephens @ Amway
More details to follow. March 5 – Kent County Clerk / Register of Deeds Office – Maintaining and Protecting the Public Record, Mary Hollinrake, Jerome Czaja @ Kent Records Management
The Kent County Clerk / Register of Deeds Offices handle hundreds of records on a daily basis. Statute requires that these records be maintained in a secure, non-alterable form, while also providing the general public access with a means of accessing the records. Because of the volume of these records, and the fact that many of these records are over 100 years old, providing access can prove to be challenging. Over the past several years, these offices have undertaken several projects to digitize and preserve these records. Being in a digital format will allow greater access to these records while also allowing the records to be preserved for generations to come. Several of these projects will be discussed along with information on how the records are stored. April 16 Spring Seminar – Case Studies – Dawn Ward, Norbert Kugele – Warner Norcross & Judd @ Amway
Early Bird Special Rate125.00 all day
Regular Rate150.00 if not registered before 4/2/15.
*WNJ will provide a fact pattern before the seminar. In the fact pattern, a company will be addressing several issues, including: a security breach and a myriad of legal claims. The presenters will unpack the issues and determine how best to address the issues and also how they could have been avoided via the right information governance policies and procedures. There will also be breakout sessions wherein we give the audience options on what topics to focus on – privacy/security; RIM; or e-discovery – in order to perform a deeper dive and potentially address similar issues currently affecting the company representatives at the seminar.
