There are others…but “none of them have inspired the wide popularity and almost cult following that this receiver was.”

At 270WPC, this was Pioneer’s final blow in the great Watt Wars.

Slides 3 / 4 — the original power supply boards were prone to overheating. This was replaced with modern components and a more heat-friendly design, from the one supplier in North America for these boards. At $600 for a hand-built board, the power supply is almost a steal for a unit like this.

Slide 5— the main filter capacitors were also replaced. The modern variants (blue) are somewhat shorter than the originals, and had to be raised in the unit to provide appropriate terminal contact.

Slide 6 — Tuner board, flat amp board, phono board, tone control board. All other boards had capacitors & transistors changed out. Because each component requires testing and hand-soldering (and un-soldering!), this makes up most of the hours spent on this project.

Slide 7 — Differential pairs are essentially two transistors, wired side-by-side. Each leg has to be carefully soldered in the right place — none of these are simple drop-in components. Output transistors ore the muscle of the amplifier, providing the raw power needed to actually drive your speakers.

This was a customer unit repaired by Serge. Not for sale.

People may define "audiophile" in different ways.
It can be an industry / hobby term.
But here...it's kinda a dirty word.

Having great gear is great.
Spending a lot on your hobby is fine.
If it brings you joy, we're all for it.

But if your "love of gear" turns you into a hater...that's where we lose respect for the term "audiophile".
