In 2013, I dropped my phone and it hit the corner of the coffee table at just the right angle. Screen gone. Data unrecoverable.

This photo survived because I posted it to Facebook. The one I loved most -- just me and my baby boy, his cherubic cheeks pressed against mine -- is stuck in a broken phone that I still have sitting in a bin, just in case someone someday figures out how to recover it.

For a lot of us, our Facebook feed is the backup plan we never knew we had.

But only if you recover it before the platform changes, the account gets hacked, or the tech graveyard claims something else.

In 1990, a man in Boston bought a typewriter store. He knew it was a silly time to do it. But he loved the work, so he did it anyway.

Ten years later he was one of the only typewriter stores left in the country. Then high school kids started coming in for typewriters to write poetry. Business boomed.

Everything old is new again.

I've never invited someone to flip through my cloud account over a cup of coffee. But I have shared our printed Facebook history with our kids, with family, with friends sitting in the kitchen.

A book is old technology. It will also outlive every social media platform we've ever used.

Someday your kids will pull your Recap off a shelf. What will they find?

Her mom used a stapler.

Not photo corners. Not archival paper. A stapler, haphazardly placed, with hastily scribbled notes.

And it was the best photo album The Bearded Iris had ever seen. Because it was actually done.

The number one reason people don't make their Recap book is that their feed isn't complete enough. Or their captions weren't good enough. Or they didn't post every trip they took.

Done is better than perfect. It always has been.

I don't remember why I was making a cake that day. But because I posted it on Facebook, I know it was April 18, 2011 — probably Easter — and I know exactly how my baby looked when I handed him the chocolate-covered be**er.

I hadn't thought about that afternoon in years. Until I turned my Facebook posts into a book.
