It is easy to dismiss flashing lights as just "annoying" or harmless, but if you are reading this, it affects you personally as well. The reality is that this impacts hundreds of millions of people, whether you have a formal photosensitive epilepsy diagnosis or not.

We put this article together to break down the actual science behind visual stress, the constant risk exposure we see on social media, and the broader neurological impact involved. We also touch on how OptiGuard is working to fix this problem before it reaches the user.

Let's build a safer visual world.

Flashing and strobing effects are still an overlooked hazard - On and off the screen.

A timely reminder during one of the most visually intense (but beautiful) holidays!

Many digital games and online experiences now include warnings for people who are sensitive to flashing or rapidly changing visuals.

Awareness is important - but online, most videos don’t come with any warning at all.

OptiGuard is being developed to help reduce visual risk automatically and quietly, without creators needing to change how they make content.

Accessibility works best when it’s built in.

Why flash frequency matters

The human visual system is highly sensitive to rapid brightness and contrast changes over time. Flicker in the range below ~60 Hz is often consciously visible, while higher-frequency flicker can still stress the visual system even when it appears “steady.”

Research shows that rapid luminance modulation can increase eye strain, visual fatigue, headaches, and discomfort by forcing continuous pupil and neural adaptation. This is why higher refresh-rate displays (120 Hz+) and flicker-free backlights are considered easier on the eyes.

Most digital video runs at 24-60 fps and is displayed on 60-120 Hz screens, meaning flashing patterns and high-contrast edits can land directly in sensitive temporal ranges. Even when viewers don’t consciously perceive flicker, the visual system still processes it.

This is the class of problem OptiGuard is designed to detect and reduce.

Introducing OptiGuard

Flashing and rapidly flickering visuals aren’t just annoying - for hundreds of millions of people of all ages, they can trigger migraines, sensory overload, optical and neurological degradation over time, or even seizures.

OptiGuard is a new AI technology I’m building to make digital video safer.

This page will document the journey, demos, and progress as OptiGuard evolves.

What OptiGuard Does

OptiGuard is an AI that:

Detects potentially dangerous flashing patterns in video

Identifies where the flashing is happening on screen

Neutralizes those flashes, without destroying the rest of the video

The goal is simple:

> Let people watch content safely, without losing the content itself.

Why This Matters

Flashing visuals are everywhere:

Social media reels

Music videos

Gaming clips

Ads and trailers

Right now, creators aren’t warned, platforms don’t block it, and viewers are expected to “look away” or just suffer through it.

That’s not acceptable.

What You’ll See Here

Visual demos (before & after)

Real-world test clips

Progress updates

This is still early-stage, but the core technology already works - and today’s post includes a visual demo showing flash mitigation in action and the side-by-side difference.

If you or someone you know is affected by flashing content, migraines, or photosensitivity, you’re exactly who this is for.

Thanks for being here.
