I met with a CEO this week who has spent 20+ years leading in his industry.
Heâs seen the trends, lived the challenges, and shaped the wins.
Now he wants to build a personal brand that captures all of that.
Not for vanity. Not for clout.
But to drive thought leadership, attract new opportunities, and create a legacy.
His hesitation?
âI donât have an audience yet. Who would even listen to my podcast?â
đŻHereâs what I told him:
A podcast without an audience isnât a disadvantage. Itâs a blank canvas.
The podcast itself can become the magnet. The show doesnât need millions on day one, it needs clarity, positioning, and persistence.
Hereâs how I told him to think about it:
1ď¸âŁ Your angle matters more than your mic.
Forget being generic. The riches are in the niche.
Instead of a âleadership podcast,â what about a show on navigating change in your regulated industry, something he knows inside out?
2ď¸âŁ Build for one person.
Imagine your perfect listener. A decision-maker, a peer, or even your younger self. Speak to them every week and let the audience scale from there.
3ď¸âŁ Content is a contract.
If you donât enjoy making it, you wonât last. Your energy transfers.
4ď¸âŁ Format is freedom.
Pick what works best: solo to own the message, interviews to build community, or co-hosted for chemistry. Consistency is more important than perfection.
5ď¸âŁ Promotion is part of the product.
Every clip, every quote, every guest mention extends your reach. Done well, marketing isnât separate from the podcast, itâs really baked in.
6ď¸âŁ Guests are growth engines.
Invite leaders in the space. Their audience discovers you, and your credibility compounds.
7ď¸âŁ Trailers sell.
Think of it like a Netflix preview. Make it binge-worthy! A 2-minute sizzle reel builds trust before you ever ask for 45 minutes.
8ď¸âŁ Consistency compounds.
Drop new episodes on the same day. Create habits. Make it part of someoneâs week.
The truth is, every cult podcast starts from zero. What separates the ones that grow is positioning, persistence, and promotion!
Donât wait for an audience to build a platform. Build the platform, and the audience will come.
