One big codebase, or dozens of small services?
Every software team runs into this question sooner or later, and a lot of teams answer it based on what's trendy instead of what's actually hurting.
In this video, Dacodi walks through the decision with Rutavo, a logistics startup that begins as a monolith and keeps growing:
- Early on, a monolith is a gift. One repo, one deploy, one database.
- It starts to hurt when every change ships the whole app and teams keep stepping on each other.
- Microservices let you deploy, fail and scale each part on its own. That freedom comes with a bill: retries, timeouts, tracing, data consistency and a bigger cloud invoice.
- Our advice: start with a modular monolith, split only for a real pain, and peel off one service at a time.
- If AI agents are on your roadmap, clean and safe APIs matter more than how many services you run.
Microservices are not a badge of maturity. They're a trade-off.
