Hello hello! 💖 Sorry it's been a minute - I stupidly (or smartly, idk) signed myself up for a ton of events in a row and in combination of being sick and dealing with trying to sell my house I am just utterly exhausted these days. But I wanted to pop on here and share something with you all: this poster I had designed for the Hot Summer Solstice Show happening this Saturday. 😁
Inspired by Woodstock posters, I created this design with a lot of symbolic imagery. Starting with the main focal point being different animals representing strength and power in their respective cultures, these motifs celebrate our diversity, yet show that based on how you view them (your "perspective" literally and metaphorically, if you will) show that these animals/symbols like ourselves are actually not so different from each other. Like how the lion and tiger are similar as well as the eagle and dragon. I wanted to form a visual connection amongst the animals as well through color and being linked. Ultimately I wanted these visual elements to be woven together to create a simple but important message:
"Practice Radical Empathy."
Because at a time when it often feels easier to divide than to connect, this poster is a reminder that empathy is an active practice, one that asks us to see ourselves in others and recognize the value of different perspectives and experiences. I wanted the eyes to represent this message along with the doves to represent peace and understanding.
Of course at the bottom I wanted to include the tagline: "Perspective is Powerful" to further bring the design together and as a play on words because I wanted the design to make you approach it/the world with different eyes to see things differently. And I had to include monarchs as they are a symbol of migration, and since the proceeds of this poster are going to I just thought they were so fitting.
