Let’s chat - episode 1 (should this be a podcast episode? 😅)
I feel like I’ve been getting this a lot lately. It goes through season of clients being fine paying the price and then potential new clients scared off by the prices.
As I’m starting to take more clients on again, I’ve been lowballing myself. Which is drastically hurting my business. I’ve actually considered dissolving my business multiple times this fall. Basically, I can save money in my business account for my monthly charges but not pay myself for the bills we have to pay. So I wanted to talk about how designers are humans who also need to pay bills, groceries, mortgages or rent, etc.
So let’s go through my Business costs (which I cancelled a lot since I haven’t been working as much):
▪️Honeybooks $39.00 Monthly
▪️Adobe CC $62.30 Monthly
▪️Skillshare 106.92 Annual
▪️Canva $119.99 Annual
▪️Domain $40 Annual
▪️Google Workspace $72 Annual
▪️Squarespace Commerce Basic $336 Annual ▪️Bank Fee $15.00 Monthly (due to me not working as much, there isn’t much in the account)
Here’s a few family expenses (not all but hopefully you get the idea):
▪️Groceries $150+ Weekly
▪️Animal feed + Ranger’s rehab $235 Monthly (doesn’t included Ranger neurologist cost and meds if a flare up happens. This month will be almost 1K for one dog alone) if you don’t know, go check out for the backstory.
▪️Utilities (water, electric, internet) $500+ Monthly (summer months get us good with the water due to garden and lawn care)
Not listed: mortgage, streaming services, kids events, preschool, cell phone, daycare (we don’t do daycare now), money we are saving in certain accounts, etc.
So asking a designer to create something for $50 or a branding packages under $1k. Don’t get offended when we hold our ground on our pricing. We know this is a huge investment. We value our time and processes while creating/working on your project. Our time spent working on your projects is precious to us because we want you to succeed as a business and our own business to succeed.
