We blinked and summer break was over!
Yesterday Ella got her yellow belt in Gracie jiu-jitsu and today she’s taking all that “bully-proof pma” with her to middle school. Middle school!!
We were lucky to be able to meet up with her besties outside of the school so they could walk in together. It’s beautiful to see how much more confident they are with each other’s support and we couldn’t be more grateful for these boys

🎓 And just like that this 5th grader graduated elementary school yesterday and is ready to start middle school. But first a well deserved summer break!
It was a bittersweet last trip home on her skateboard (see video in the comments). The last two school years were the weirdest and we had to deal with so many new and sometimes really messed up situations, just like all of you, but we made it so far. Let’s hope we can all ride these crazy pandemic times out with good health, more compassion and tons more kindness. 🤞🏼
We apologize for not posting on here much lately. We didn’t even post the picture when Ella returned to in-school classes in September (added it now) and our annual X-mas picture (will post later).
Wishing everyone a waaaaaaaaaay better summer than the last one and a special thank you goes out to my “mommy-crew” here in AZ for raising wonderful boys for Ella to hang out with, love you ladies! ♥️ Susannah Nietz Andrea Roberson Meg Mils

Dear Ella,

You’ll need restaurants and concert venues and sunsets and road trips.
Airplanes and passports and new songs and old songs, but people more than anything else.
You will need other people and you will need to be that other person to someone else, a living, breathing, screaming invitation to believe better things.
Remember you will never influence the world by being just like it. You do you, girl!

We’re wishing you the happiest of birthdays and hope the double digit life is a thousands times better than the single digit life. We will miss it and cherish it forever. Love, mom & dad.

For anybody curious about her outfit, she’s playing a live “parking lot” show with Guns N’ Roses covers later today, so her birthday will literally rock! 🤘🏼
Due to temperatures still in the triple digits here, School of Rock Scottsdale can’t guarantee a “glitch free” live stream, but it will be filmed and streamed at a later date. We’ll let you know as soon as it is online, so you can enjoy this (not so) little drummer’s skills, because according to daddy and Al she made tremendous progress.

In memory of Justin Townes Earle because we as a family will miss him dearly.
He shared Ella’s love of books and he would light up talking to her about the incredible amount of books he read, he shared Ella’s mom’s hatred of injustice and couldn’t get enough of discussing social issues, but more than anything he shared Ella’s dad’s passion for anything music related, hence why they were the dream-team these past two years.
We named Ella after Ella Fitzgerald, his little girl was named after Etta James, his music was different than what we usually listen to, but if you listen to the lyrics you’ll find out he’s a punk rocker at heart, and one of the things we all agreed upon, including Ella, was the justification of an unhealthy admiration for Lemmy from Motörhead.
It’ll be a lot more boring without him in our lives and the world will have to miss a huge talent, it’s just so sad.
Ella and I picked this song because it’s the Justin we knew, a genius mess, outspoken and beyond talented, and Laurens Kusters makes a small appearance, doing what he does best.
Jenn, I hope you see this (not tagging for privacy), know that you and Etta can always count on us, sending tons of love your way.

Who has some encouraging words for a brand-new fifth grader who now started week 2 of enhanced distance learning and feels super lonely? Ella loves “taking her dog to school” but misses her friends so much 😔
Truth be told, this family definitely had it with this virus and we’d shoot it into the sun where it belongs if we could, totally over it. Pretty sure we’re not alone with this sentiment, but we hope you all still try and make the best of this unfortunate situation, rooting for all of you 🤞🏼♥️🤞🏼
Look in the comments if you want to improve your Monday with some cute school pictures. The first one is from last week, the second one from last Spring as a 4th grader, the third one is Ella in 1st grade and the last one is her first school picture ever in nursery school (which was no joke apparently).
Wishing you all a great week and good health! Stay strong 💪🏼

We’ve loved seeing our feeds flooded by gorgeous black and white pictures of many of you, but do you know the origins of the black and white photo challenge?
originally started to raise awareness for the current femicides occurring in Turkey, where women’s black & white photos are shown on news outlets after being murdered. Sad to see that the original message has been mostly lost.
In July alone, 40 women have been murdered so far.
Then came ̈ltekin - a 27 year old student who was beaten and strangled to death by her ex boyfriend who then burned her body and covered it in cement.
Her attacker was found and arrested due to social media coverage.
The horrific nature of Pınar’s death and the entitled attitude of her killer generated widespread anger in Turkey. Many pop and sports stars, politicians and ordinary members of the public have expressed their outrage at the murder on social media, with Pınar Gültekin’s name trending for several days.
Women began sharing black and white photos on social media last week to protest domestic violence and Femicide. The photos are to represent the b&w photos of murdered women which appear in the newspapers on a daily basis. The message behind the campaign is: it could be any one of us.
Women have taken to the streets in Istanbul and other cities to protest the rising violence against women in the country, which on average results in at least one woman a day murdered in Turkey.
Data provided by women’s activist body 'We Will Stop Femicides Platform' shows a significant rise in the number of women killed in Turkey.
In 2013 the total was 237, rising to 294 in 2014.
303 women were murdered in 2015, 328 in 2016, 409 in 2017, and 440 in 2018.
A total of 474 women were killed in Turkey in 2019, a rise of 200% since 2013.
It is thought at least 146 women have been killed in the first six months of 2020.
Unfortunately the original hashtags related to this challenge were lost. Can you please use these as you continue to post?

Please, share her story and her photo as well.
Thank you so much for passing the love Melissa Koller Krista Marianino and thanks for shedding a light on the origin of this challenge Daniela Bella. We thought this challenge was pretty rad as it is already, but it makes it so much more meaningful knowing what’s behind it, especially with a sister/aunt who’s half Turkish, we love you Miete-meryem Dierick and wish you an amazing wedding day this weekend!!!

We have no words. 😢
Incredibullstella is the first we started following on social media. Stella’s mom, Marika was protesting at our airport because of Delta’s ridiculous pit bull ban, that’s out very first memory of her.
Marika, we didn’t know you that well, but you were our local hero and we’re so glad we were able to thank you in person for all that you did for the and a ton of dogs that needed help. We promise to always speak up for our beloved forever and ever, in your memory 🙏🏼
Stella, Walle, Brian, Caitie and Carly we’re keeping you in our hearts and send you our sincere condolences. We hope you all stay ♥️

This past Saturday we marched. We just had to.
Ella decorated her sign, made a necklace, repurposed her skateboard to bring free water, put on her The Interrupters t-shirt and Sick Of It All face mask and endured 100+ degree weather to stand up against racism.
Even though it’s utterly embarrassing that we still have to protest this s**t in 2020, it felt comforting to be around so many likeminded people and to feel there’s still love and hope in this world driven by greed and thirst for power.
👇🏽
Look in the comments to see more pictures and read two amazing quotes (because other people are way better with words than this mommy will ever be), one by the amazing and one by the world’s best kisser (not speaking from experience though😄) who wrote this particular rant back in 2017, but it still stands.
And yes, we broke the social distance rule for a minute to take a group shot. How could we not with all these cool people wearing cool t-shirts? It was a kid’s march and we assume that parents who are responsible enough to teach their kids about racism are equally responsible to not bring sick people to such an event. And we had our masks too!

To quote amazing mama, : “silence is violence even when it’s trendy” and that’s why we’re replacing our black square from earlier this week with some social media posts that really resonated with us instead. There are 10 in total, apologies for taking up all this space.
We understand that we will never understand, but we stand in solidarity with the black community and are opening our hearts and minds to learn how we can help.
I think the kindest thing we can do right now as parents is to tell our kids the uncomfortable truth about racism. We might think that not talking about it is the nice thing to do, keeping them innocent, but being nice will not help Ella and other children grow into kind and responsible human beings. Just this mama’s 2 cents, because I stand with Monique when she says that there’s no innocence for a white child born into whiteness when a system of white supremacy is in place.

Not our usual kind of social media post, but enough is enough and having to explain oppression and white supremacy to a 9 year old breaks my heart, but children are not colorblind and need us to teach them about the awesomeness of diversity before they pick up on stereotypes that are being thrown around by the media and misinformed people, because those are the breeding ground for prejudice.

"We can't breathe.
My brown throat,
your black throat.
Both suffocated by
our oppressors’ boot.

The oxygen molecules,
our lifeblood,
choked off from reaching
our hearts and brains.

Oppressors cloaked in the
fake authority of a uniform:
a coward's way to impose
your white rules,
your so-called superior DNA.

We can't breathe.
Even the air is not for free.
Our lungs are too “colored”
for their oxygen.

We can't breathe.
They want us to disappear
for the sake of their fragile egos.

Your so-called justice is exposed
by the democracy of the camera
in the middle of the street.
Our dignity is too strong
to be crushed."

Poem by from Gaza, dedicated to George Floyd.
Art by dedicated to George Floyd.

Imagine being pressed down onto concrete with a solid 200 lbs sitting directly on your neck. This man begged for his life. This grown man asked for his mom, for water, for mercy once he realized he was slowly being killed. His nose bled and he lost control of his bladder. Yet he remained trapped under the weight of the officer’s knee.
In handcuffs crying because he could not breathe. Onlookers tried to intervene only to be threatened with pepper spray. Then he lost consciousness. The weight of that knee stayed firm while a first responder demanded they check for a pulse. They refused. The weight stayed on his neck. Off duty medical personnel begged for the officer to get up.
We watched a man being killed. For 10 agonizing minutes. Imagine dying that way.
His name is George Floyd.
(thx for sharing this Jay Seltzer)
And please hold the comments about the looters, if you criticize them harder than the police officers committing murder, it’s telling. If you’re mad at them for looting chain stores owned by billion dollar corporations and not mad at the government looting you of the money you pay yearly in taxes and giving it to billion dollar corporations, you should take your fake outrage somewhere else, we don’t have room for that. And no, all this violence isn’t the answer and won’t bring back George Floyd, but bombing the Middle East (for 19 years now!) couldn’t reverse 9/11 either, and a lot of people seemed to be ok with that.
It’s about time white people stand up for racial justice everywhere, because if you’re not outraged you’re not paying attention.
