When a loved one passes and you take their life insurance policy to a funeral home, do not sign an assignment of benefits without reading it carefully.

Ask for a complete itemized statement showing every product and service you selected, the price of each item, the total funeral cost, any processing or third-party fees, and the exact amount of insurance benefits being assigned. Make sure everything listed is something you requested and will actually receive.

You also do not have to automatically use the obituary company the funeral home is contracted with. You have the right to choose the company you trust to design and print your loved one’s obituary programs.

If you choose an outside company, tell the funeral home before signing anything. Bring the company’s written invoice, legal business name, pricing, and payment information. Ask whether that expense can be listed as a third-party cash-advance item and paid directly to your chosen business from the assigned proceeds. Get the payment arrangement in writing because funeral-home and insurance-assignment procedures can vary.

Most importantly, verify how much of the policy is being assigned and how any remaining insurance proceeds will be paid to the beneficiary. Never sign simply because paperwork is placed in front of you. Read every line, ask questions, and understand exactly where the money is going.
