Domestic violence rises when England play. It rises when they win, when they lose, and even when they draw. 😳
The pattern has been documented across multiple World Cups and by police forces over several tournaments. Reports show abuse increases by more than a third after England losses and still rises significantly even after victories. Alcohol-related incidents also increase sharply, and the elevated risk often continues into the following day.
Some police forces have reported their busiest domestic abuse periods of the entire year during England fixtures, while health services have also recorded increases in domestic abuse-related injuries during major tournaments.
Football does not cause abuse — abusers do.
But events like the World Cup can amplify existing risks through heightened emotions, alcohol consumption, gambling pressure, and the intensity that surrounds major matches. For some households, the impact lasts far longer than the final whistle.
