A buckling spring is a mechanical keyswitch mechanism used primarily in computer keyboards, featuring a coiled compression spring that buckles laterally under key depression to provide tactile feedback, an audible click, and reliable electrical contact registration.

The mechanism operates by compressing a helical spring axially until it reaches a critical point, causing it to catastrophically buckle and generate a torsional force. This action actuates a pivoting hammer or rocker that interacts with capacitive or membrane contacts to complete the circuit, delivering a sharp "snap" and distinct sound often described as "thock" or "click-clack."
