Security & Privacy in AR/VR: New Threats & Defenses 🚨

AR/VR technology is transforming how we interact with the digital world, but with innovation comes new security and privacy risks.

Watch Professor Nael Abu-Ghazaleh, of California, Riverside, as he dives into groundbreaking research, uncovering attacks and vulnerabilities in Extended Reality (XR) systems—from side-channel exploits to multi-user manipulation and even interference causing motion sickness! 🤯

🔐 Learn how these threats impact users & what can be done to build more secure AR/VR experiences.

Talk moderated by the chapter chair, Dr. Vishnu Pendyala, San Jose State University, College of Information, Data and Society

Congratulations to Dwith for successfully taking over as the editor of the Feedforward magazine of IEEE Computer Society Santa Clara Valley Chapter that I started 2 years ago and doing a splendid job bringing out the first issue (Vol. 3 No. 1) under his stewardship. I started many grand initiatives since the time I was an undergraduate student - Association of CSE Students (ACSES) at Osmania University - College of Engineering, JeeFier (Published Division G, District 4 of Toastmasters International), and alongwith others, Third Wave, CSIH Communique (publications of Computer Society of India [CSI] - Hyderabad Chapter), Visleshana (Flagship publication of SIGBDA, Computer Society of India), to name a few. All of them were highly successful under my leadership and I even won awards for some of them. But none of them exist today.

Over the years, I realized that having a succession plan is more important than succeeding in founding and handling the initiatives. I sincerely hope that Feedforward will exist for many more years and so will my other initiatives for the chapter like ICADS, the annual International Conference on Applied , the AMA series, and more.

Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering for the IEEE Computer Society Santa Clara Valley Chapter and read the current and past issues of the magazine here:

It is time for incorporating Data Science and AI into the U.S.

The US Congress is making history in unprecedented ways (https://apnews.com/article/santos-house-republicans-speaker-mike-johnson-809d2c0b4e261fe39c0f8c69cfd462e3). Time and again, the US Supreme court has been overturning its own rulings (https://constitution.congress.gov/resources/decisions-overruled/). How much can only people be trusted absolutely with governing the countries? Majority vote and fashionable trends may not always lead to common good. Any amount of referendum or plebiscite may not show but data is very likely to show how many homes were broken and how many became homeless in the last few decades owing to the laws passed from time to time, particularly those that liberalized the value system and favored individual liberties, short term gains over common good.

In this OpEd, I argue that it is time for data-driven methods and to figure in the U.S. constitution. In addition to the constitutional checks and balances currently in place, there should be an automated check based on data incorporated into the constitution. There is a need to call for a tricameral legislature, the third house being a set of big data technologies and artificial intelligence to vet the impact of the proposed bills and executive orders. The U.S. Constitution needs to be amended to enforce the additional check thereby setting an example to other countries in the world.
