“Why should we spend time and money helping the people of Haiti while there are so many issues to deal with here in America?”
Recently our Director of Partner Development, Bryan McInnis, was speaking in a church about the work of Healing Haiti. After the service, a man approached him and asked the above question.
In fact, this is a question we get asked often, because, of course there are so many needs that exist in our nation (even in our own neighborhoods).
So how do we respond to this question?
First, we believe God calls each person to a unique way of loving the world. So whether God invites you to serve elders living in Cite Soleil or children struggling with hunger in Minneapolis, our responsibility is to respond to God’s unique call on our lives.
Second, Haiti remains one of the most under-resourced places on the planet. Unlike the U.S., there are virtually no social welfare programs or national infrastructure that targets the most vulnerable.
Finally (and most importantly), we believe that because of Jesus, common sources of division such as nationality, ethnicity, and socio-economic standing are of far less importance than our common identity as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Paul says it this way in Galatians, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
In Christ there exist no national borders (or any other dividing line) that can be used to create an “us-them” dynamic. There is only Jesus, and the adventure Jesus has invited you into: to go where he calls you to go, and love the one he puts in front of you.

Please pray

One of our longterm missionaries, Alicia, recently shared news of an increasingly challenging situation in Haiti,

“…the ongoing gang violence - which is affecting Haiti as whole, not just Cite Soleil - is unlike anything I've experienced so far. The multitudes of families seeking refuge as they flee gang attacks makes my heart sink, hearing the words "peyi'm pa bon" (my country is no good) from my friends brings me to tears, and the war cries from the major gang leaders echoed on the radio stations is enough to stir up fear in any heart.”

Our commitment to empowering the people of Haiti isn’t rooted in convenience. Jesus rarely sailed with his disciples on calm waters. Instead, he spoke calm into the center of the storm. Our commitment to Haiti is a calling, and while God never promises us safety, we are assured the goodness of his presence.

We know that most of you feel the same way, which means that (like us) news of a deteriorating situation within Haiti will only lead you to lean-in with an even greater resolve. We know that as news sources broadcast stories of food shortages, violence, and political instability, we will all feel the urge to pray with greater fervency, give with greater generosity, and remind the world that Haiti will once again rise from the ashes. We will tell stories Haiti’s beauty, grit, and the lessons she has taught us (and continues to teach us).
Or as Alicia wrote, “While getting to Cite Soleil still isn't possible, our staff living there still carries out the ministry by delivering water and feeding the elders and children. I've received these pictures among others over the past week from one of our incredible staff members. I am so crazy proud of the work they do, and am grateful for the ways they love and support their own community.”
Pray for our Haitian staff and missionaries who continue to serve.
Pray for those we serve, that they would be protected and cling to the hope that Jesus offers.
Pray for peace in Haiti.
