Why is a lost laptop more than just lost hardware? 🤔

Because what's really at stake isn't the device—it's the data, credentials, and compliance risk inside it. A single missing endpoint can expose sensitive information, trigger regulatory fines, and erode customer trust long after the device is gone.

How much does a lost device actually cost a company?

According to HP, the average replacement cost is $2,272 per device. But once you factor in data loss, downtime, and compliance fallout? The real cost can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars per incident.

What hidden costs do most IT teams overlook?

Beyond hardware, organizations face:

🔹 Data exposure and legal costs (GDPR, HIPAA, FERPA, Ley 21.663)
🔹 Lost productivity while replacing and reconfiguring devices
🔹 Reputation damage that impacts customer confidence

How does device tracking help prevent these losses?

Tracking solutions like Prey provide visibility and control. You can:
📍 Locate missing devices instantly
🔒 Lock or wipe them remotely
🚧 Set geofences for automatic alerts
📋 Assign ownership to improve accountability

This shortens response time, prevents data exposure, and reduces the chance of compliance fines.

What are "ghost devices," and why should you care?

Ghost devices are unreturned or untracked endpoints—often from offboarded staff—that stay connected to company systems. They create compliance gaps, data exposure risks, and unnecessary costs. Proper tracking and lifecycle management keep your inventory clean and secure.

What should IT teams do when a device goes missing?

Act fast. Best practice includes:
✅ Flag and isolate the device in your MDM or tracking console
✅ Lock or wipe the device remotely to prevent access
✅ Notify compliance and security leads
✅ Document the incident for audit readiness

A rapid response can turn a crisis into a controlled event.

Why a Lost Laptop Isn't "Just Hardware"

Think losing a laptop only costs you a replacement device? Think again.

The staggering reality: Lost and stolen devices cost businesses $8.6 billion globally each year (HP Wolf Security). But here's what keeps security teams up at night—

It takes employees 25 hours on average to report a missing device. That's a full workweek for bad actors to:
• Extract sensitive data
• Steal credentials
• Tunnel into your systems

Hardware is just the tip of the iceberg.

With the average data breach now costing $4.44 million (Verizon DBIR 2025), that single misplaced laptop could trigger:

🔹 Regulatory fines (GDPR, HIPAA, etc.)
🔹 Customer trust erosion
🔹 Days of downtime
🔹 Legal headaches

The hybrid work factor: Over 49% of employees have used personal devices when work laptops go missing—expanding your attack surface without IT even knowing.

Bottom line: You can't stop every loss, but you can control the damage.

Smart organizations aren't just replacing devices—they're tracking, locking, and wiping them remotely before data walks out the door.

7 Ways To Protect Kids Online

Did you know that in 2016 1 out of 3 internet users were children? As this number continues to grow in 2018, parents continue to search more about internet safety for kids. In this infographic you will find 7 useful tips on using parental controls to protect your kids online, because the rules of the internet don’t really help kids.

Being exposed to inappropriate web content is one of the biggest threats the internet poses for your child. While some websites have their own kid-friendly versions, like Safety Mode on YouTube, you might still want to get an internet content filter from this list of recommended tools. It will allow you to block certain domains or content that includes keywords of your choice.

An alternative option, especially good for younger kids, is the child-safe internet browser. It already has a list of pre-approved websites and games that you can edit at will. Be sure to check the top 3 browsers we suggest in the infographic.

Most importantly, you should educate your children about potential risks from early days – show them a good example of internet ethics. If your child trusts you, he/she will feel safe sharing their online troubles and experiences. Knowing these 7 tips will allow you to help them!

Game of Thrones apologise about Hodor

SORRY FOR THE SPOILER
Unsurprisingly, by the way, there are a few of them coming up.
The show's producers have said sorry to viewers... but not because they killed off Hodor.

It's because they've finally revealed how he got his name, and they think the storyline's created a joke that will never die.
It's a shortened version of "hold the door" - the words he hears before he's killed by White Walkers.

Except, because at that moment Bran's travelling back in time, Hodor also hears those words 40 years in the past.
As a boy he foresees his own death, and that's when he loses the ability to speak coherently.

It was heart-wrenching stuff, leaving a lot viewers pretty emotional.
But people have also started making jokes. A lot of jokes.

The show's producers clearly aren't too impressed with the level of comedy on offer.
DB Weiss and David Benioff have appeared a sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live in the USA, to say sorry for what they've created.
"We'd like to apologise for Sunday's episode," they say, while sitting on a sofa covered in money.

"Not for killing off Hodor, we kill a lot of main characters. We've killed 739 main characters so far.

"We're sorry for all the idiots who, from now on, will be shouting 'Hodor' every time you go through a door.

"We forgot how annoying people can be. That's our bad."
