If your compliance platform vendor is also conducting your audit, your program has a structural problem.

Not a process problem, but a structural one.

The three roles in any credible compliance program must be held by these three independent parties:

1. The auditor evaluates whether your controls actually work
2. The data provider supplies the watchlists and PEP databases
3. The platform builds and runs your screening infrastructure

When any two of those belong to the same vendor, one of them stops being independent. And the thing is, independence is the entire point.

We put together a full breakdown of why this matters, what it looks like when it goes wrong, and where Truth Technologies stands on each of the three roles.

A casino host was told directly by a customer that he was an illegal bookmaker. 👀

He said nothing, filed nothing, and the information never reached compliance.

On August 20, 2026, Nevada regulators approved a $7.2 million AML settlement against The Venetian Las Vegas. It’s the fourth Las Vegas casino fined over the same bookmaker.

The same bookmaker hit four Las Vegas properties. The combined fine is $34 million.

The compliance lesson here isn’t complicated. The casino had documented concerns about this customer’s source of funds since 2019. Those concerns sat in a file and produced no action. A front-line employee received a direct admission of criminal activity and didn’t report it.

The information existed, but the system never moved it to the people who could act on it.

That’s the gap we keep seeing in AML enforcement actions, whether it’s a casino host in Las Vegas or a bank manager in New York.

We broke it all down in this week’s blog.

Big news from FinCEN this week. 📋

The Corporate Transparency Act is officially dead.

As of August 14, 2026, US companies and US persons no longer have to report beneficial ownership information to the government. FinCEN is also deleting the data it already collected.

For small businesses, that is a win.

For banks and financial institutions, not much has changed. ⚠️

Here’s why:

The CDD Rule, which has been in place since 2016, still requires banks to collect and verify beneficial ownership information directly from their customers. That rule wasn’t touched.

The government no longer holds the data, but banks still have to ask.

And with FinCEN’s database being deleted, banks can no longer use it as a backstop to verify what customers tell them. Your own due diligence process now has to do that job alone.

Most AML platforms will tell you what data they screen against.

Fewer will tell you what happens when you need data they don’t offer.

The answer, in most cases: you wait. You submit a request. You get put on a 3-5 year roadmap. Or you’re simply ignored.

That’s proprietary data lock-in. And it’s one of the most overlooked risks in compliance program design.

Once your workflows, audit history, and staff training are built around a single legacy data scheme, that vendor holds complete leverage at renewal. New programs require their action, not yours.

Sentinel™ was built around a different architecture.

We deliver a complete solution, platform and data included. But if your institution has existing data relationships or feeds your regulators expect to see, Sentinel™ runs those too. Any structured feed. Any source. Any jurisdiction.

New regulatory coverage is a configuration event, tailored to your needs.

Wise applied for a US bank charter. Its AML record applied with it. 😬

On July 21, 2026, the OCC denied Wise’s application for a national trust bank. The reason was not regulatory hostility toward fintechs. In the same period, the OCC approved charters for Circle, Ripple, Paxos, and Fidelity Digital Assets.

The reason was Wise’s compliance record.

One month after filing, Wise US received a multistate consent order for late SAR filings, transaction monitoring gaps, and a missing independent compliance review. The OCC could not confirm the proposed bank would run an effective AML program. ⚠️

AML failures do not only generate fines. They can block an entire growth strategy.

If your firm has licensing or charter ambitions, the state of your AML program is not just a compliance concern. It is a strategic one.

The AI's algorithm flagged it. Now what? 🚩

Technology can screen millions of records, generate audit trails, and monitor customers continuously without fatigue.

What it cannot do is think.

It cannot explain why an unusual transaction is actually expected given that customer's history. It cannot write a SAR narrative. And it cannot answer the question every examiner eventually asks:

"Why did you make that decision?"

That answer requires a person. Always.

Sentinel™ handles what technology does well so your AML/BSA team can focus on what only they can do.

$14.5 million fine in 2018. A promise to fix it. The same failures still running in 2026. FinCEN’s response: $125 million. 👀

The largest BSA penalty ever imposed on a broker-dealer, and it was entirely avoidable.

UBS Financial Services told FinCEN it would have a new monitoring system in place by mid-2019. It was not deployed until March 2021. When it was, it was pulling the wrong data feed. FinCEN found out through its own investigation, not from UBS.

The CDD failures are just as striking. ⚠️

One customer relocated to Russia and received wires exclusively from a Russian bank for eight years. His risk profile was never updated. Another generated 300+ negative news articles at onboarding. UBSFS reviewed 25 of them.

FinCEN tracks what you promise. It tracks whether you deliver. And when it comes back, it brings the receipts.

Do you know what manual AML/KYC compliance is actually costing your organization? 💵

Most teams don’t, and that’s exactly the problem.

When you factor in analyst salaries, the hours lost to false positives, onboarding delays caused by manual KYC, multiple compliance data vendors, and regulatory fine exposure, the number gets uncomfortable fast.

We built a FREE ROI Calculator so you can see it clearly.

Put in your numbers:
🔵 Number of AML/KYC analysts on staff
🔵 Searches run per month
🔵 Current false positive rate
🔵 New clients onboarded per month
🔵 Number of separate compliance vendors

And it spits out your estimated annual cost of doing compliance the manual way, alongside what Sentinel™ saves you.

Your analysts didn’t get into compliance to spend their days clearing noise. They’re there to catch real threats, make judgment calls, and keep your institution protected. Every hour spent chasing a false positive is an hour they’re not doing that.

The calculator puts a number on it. Most people are surprised by how big it is.

Most compliance teams know they need to screen for PEPs.
Fewer have a precise definition of who actually qualifies.

The three categories in the graphic below are where most programs break down. Foreign PEPs get screened. Domestic PEPs sometimes get screened. PEPs by association almost never do.

And that last category is the one regulators cite most often in enforcement actions.

We just published a full breakdown covering what each category requires, what Enhanced Due Diligence actually looks like in practice, and why periodic review cycles miss status changes that continuous monitoring catches automatically.

$11,000 in gift cards. That is what it cost a criminal network to move $474 million through TD Bank accounts between 2019 and 2021. 😧

A former TD Bank assistant branch manager processed 1,680 bank checks worth over $92 million and concealed the identity of the criminal ring’s leader from the bank’s compliance systems. His colleagues flagged the suspicious activity. He ignored it.

On July 20, 2026, he was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison.

This connects directly to TD Bank’s 2024 guilty plea and $3 billion fine, the largest BSA penalty in US history. The institutional fine established the scale of the failure. This sentencing puts a face on it. ⚠️

The hardest part for compliance teams to sit with is this: the information needed to stop it existed inside the bank. It just never reached the people who could act on it.

Your monitoring is only as strong as the human layer it depends on.
