For many of us, the word AI brings up something cold, or something that arrives to replace us. What I was actually doing looked a good deal more ordinary than that.
I was working with a research assistant. A very competent and very thorough one that I have worked with for about a year now, so by this point it knows how I write and what I tend to be looking for. It knows that everything needs a reference, and that if there is no reference, it stays out. None of that came preloaded. It learned it from working alongside me, the same way a person would.
So I could hand over a little information and get a whole package back.
What surprised me was less the technology itself and more what it feels like to work with something that has picked up your standards and holds them steady for you. That is a quieter kind of help than the headlines describe, and perhaps a more useful one.
If you have been keeping this at arm’s length, you may find there is less to brace for than you expected.
The full episode goes further into this, and into what I am building next. Comment ASSISTANT and I will send you the link.
