Headroom, a new bar and eatery soon to open in Jersey City, NJ, commissioned us to design their logo and marketing materials ahead of their 2018 opening. The Headroom site is a large, industrial space with very tall ceilings, and wide, prominent structural columns. The presence of the tall ceilings influenced the name of the bar, which also carries a reference to beer head. In our graphic treatment of the name, we discovered something interesting that happened when you split the word in half, stacking the word “head” alone on top in lowercase. By luck, the ascenders of the “h” and “d” symmetrically frame a negative space in the center of the design. Effectively, this logo shows you and illustrates the head room that you experience when you’re in the space. In terms of drawing style, we restricted the shapes in the main portion of the logo to circles, 90 degree angles, and 45 degree angles. Stems where unnecessary, were removed for style purposes, which you'll notice in the “d,” “r,” and “m” shapes. The dividing bar separating the main logotype and the bar's tagline echoes the width of the logotype stems.
