A piece in response to the 2018 crisis in America involving immigrant children, and family separations. Taking a hardline stance on immigration is one thing, but knowingly traumatizing children as both a deterrent strategy, and to score political points is simply cruel and shameful. Help at ACLU.org.

From the archives, 2016. This was produced around the same time that we designed the logo for the NY Pin Up Club on the occasion of their 9th anniversary. To commemorate their 9th year as an organization, the NY Pin Up Club produced a Film Noir-themed live burlesque and variety show show called “9mm.” We had a lot of fun with the poster & promo materials for this show, setting everything in blacks and gold, as a nod to the old Hollywood Film Noir aesthetic. We also arranged the performers and other information along the right edge of the piece in a manner to subtly evoke the look of a strip of film.

Summer 2018 marks the 10th annual “Plaktivat” design competition in Slovenia organized by the advertising agency Tam-Tam and the Divja Misel Institute for Nonopofit Communication. Each year a different theme is explored, and this year's theme is the promotion of book reading in our increasingly screen-based culture. As technology progresses, there’s been an inevitable decrease in the public's relationship with the voice and beauty of books, and the unique benefits that book reading brings. In every year's competition, the selected design is printed and published on 500 large-scale city posters across Slovenia. As much as we love using subtle textures in our pieces, for this particular poster, viewing distance was a driving factor for consideration. The public will often be seeing these posters from afar, so we decided to commit to an extreme minimalism, so that you don’t need to be in close proximity to the piece to appreciate it fully. We produced an illustration of an ascending figure with book pages for wings. The Slovene type seen roughly translates to “Let books sweep you away.” We rotated the copy and graphics on the lower half of the design to a 45 degree angle to give the poster a retro early-20th century Constructivist/propaganda look. Additionally, this angle helps the messaging ascend in a manner very similar to the movement of the central figure. Color-wise, the goal was for the piece to feel friendly, soothing, and aspirational... so a blue/teal gradient with a contrasting sun yellow were used.

Headroom, a new bar and eatery soon to open in Jersey City, NJ, commissioned us to design their logo and marketing materials ahead of their 2018 opening. The Headroom site is a large, industrial space with very tall ceilings, and wide, prominent structural columns. The presence of the tall ceilings influenced the name of the bar, which also carries a reference to beer head. In our graphic treatment of the name, we discovered something interesting that happened when you split the word in half, stacking the word “head” alone on top in lowercase. By luck, the ascenders of the “h” and “d” symmetrically frame a negative space in the center of the design. Effectively, this logo shows you and illustrates the head room that you experience when you’re in the space. In terms of drawing style, we restricted the shapes in the main portion of the logo to circles, 90 degree angles, and 45 degree angles. Stems where unnecessary, were removed for style purposes, which you'll notice in the “d,” “r,” and “m” shapes. The dividing bar separating the main logotype and the bar's tagline echoes the width of the logotype stems.

Shown is our promotional poster & illustrative style for the 54th annual Chicago International Film Festival, presented by Cinema/Chicago. The Chicago International Film Festival was created in 1964 by filmmaker and graphic artist Michael Kutza. This piece was great fun to develop, using some of the visual language of Art Deco to give some retro Hollywood drama to the presentation. The old fashioned theatre marquees have such a wonderful aesthetic, so we set an abstract illustration of one as the centerpiece, displaying the festival’s 2018 slogan. Subtle textures were included to recall older techniques in poster design such as airbrushing and hand painting. Two different saturation levels allow the more muted background to recede back, while the crucial festival information moves forward.
