Microsoft Threat Intelligence has uncovered CaptiveCrunch, an ongoing campaign attributed to Storm-2945, a sub-cluster of Midnight Blizzard. The campaign targets travelers through compromised hospitality and captive-portal Wi-Fi networks, using traffic manipulation, phishing, device-code authentication abuse, and malware to steal credentials, session tokens, files and other sensitive data.

The biggest takeaway: don’t assume a hotel or conference Wi-Fi network is safe just because the login page looks legitimate.

A few ways to reduce your risk:
• Use a mobile hotspot, eSIM or other trusted connection for sensitive work
• Never follow “ClickFix” prompts or paste commands into PowerShell or Terminal
• Verify software updates through your operating system, not a captive portal
• Use passkeys and phishing-resistant MFA
• Block device-code authentication where possible
