What should you do if a crisis hits your salon?

After experiencing the steam pipe crisis, Solano offers some advice to other salon owners and hairdressers who may be going through a similar situation. Situations of crisis can include floods, natural disasters, blackouts, walkouts, health scares or anything else that comes up unexpectedly.

DO:
- Keep good relationships with other salons, especially the ones located in your area. We have been extremely lucky to have salons open their doors to us, from uptown to downtown throughout several occasions.
- Obtain interruption insurance to protect yourself from most situations. It’s pricey but worth it. Make sure you know exactly what you can be covered for.
- Obtain cloud base software so you have access to all of your clients’ information and you can easily communicate with them. This helps so much especially when you need to access notes and formulas.
- Keep an extra set of tools for your entire team so that if you can’t gain access to your space, they will have their tools to work with.

DON'T:
- Panic! You have to keep your team and clients safe and reassure them that everyone is doing their best to get back to business as usual.
- Assume that people are getting updates and information from social media. You must make the effort to follow-up personally.
- Hesitate to accept help from brand partners and team members. We literally had people lend and deliver product from their trunks and go shopping in different locations to get all the products and color we needed.

In an effort to educate everyone about the world of curls (the salon’s specialty), Ouidad Salon hired a PR company to reach out to local Instagram influencers who have at least 10,000 followers to come in for a complimentary color, deep treatment and curly cut service.

“Our team has created a guideline document, and during the complimentary service we hand the influencers an iPad and invite them to take over our Instagram,” Araujo says. “They are encouraged to post as many pictures and videos as possible, with a few of them living on their own pages. It’s been very successful in bringing new curly heads into the salon.”

The most effective and cheapest way of promotion is still the "Word of mouth". No matter how much you have been pouring money into attracting new customers as long as they are not happy enough to be able to recommend you to your friends, unfortunately, your efforts are not worth anything yet.
This is called viral growth, when each new client leads you to new customers, and so on. However, this requires a fair level of service delivery. So let's figure out what will make customers love you so much.
Atmosphere. A trip to the salon is often not just an "in and out", it is also a certain ritual. It's an opportunity to distract from everyday worries, from working problems, from thoughts about how much more to do and just relax! Therefore, for customers it is very important the way you greet them, what atmosphere is in your salon, how comfortable chairs are, or does it smell pleasantly, or do you offer a glass of water (or any other beverage).
Cleanliness. All instruments should be disinfected, all the rest (nails, hair, etc.) from previous clients should be cleaned. How clean it is in your salon greatly affects the overall impression.
Service. Usually the basis of business in the beauty industry is quality services. However, only those are really hard to compete, you need something that will distinguish your salon from many others. For example, after a manicure, hairstyle or any other procedure, offer the client a free hand / neck / head massage. It only takes a couple of minutes for your employees, and the client will stay with incredibly enjoyable impressions.
Lightness. It should be easy to interact with you, you should have a phone, you have to respond quickly to the messages in social networks, and even better to have an online booking. We are well aware that everyone has their working time and time to rest, and you can not answer calls at 10 o'clock in the evening. And at the same time, your client just came home and has a couple of minutes to sign up for a massage, this is one of the many cases when an online booking is very useful.
Remuneration. Encourage customers to bring their friends, give them pleasant bonuses and gifts, for example, a 50% discount on the service.

Kate Poole, owner of Vici Hair Studio and Beauty Bar in Amherst, Massachusetts about benefits of online booking for their salon and for their guests:
“We try to prebook clients’ next appointment before they leave the salon, but frequently they will decline because they don’t have their schedule with them,” Poole says, who upon checkout points out the feature to guests and reminds them to think of online booking as their own personal receptionist.

“They love that they can book right through their phones, all day, all night and on weekends,” she adds. “We all tend to think of things like booking an appointment right before going to bed at night—it’s great that clients can book right then and check it off their list.”

With the salon located close to Amherst College, Poole estimates about 50 percent of her client mix are students. “They really gravitate to the online booking, as do the working professionals who don’t have a lot of time to make personal calls,” Poole says.

As the online booking feature alleviates a percentage of incoming calls, it helps the team focus on the guests who are in the salon. “We do a ton of business over the weekend, and it really helps cut down on the calls,” she says.

While Poole admits it sometimes takes some coaching so clients know what kind of appointment they need to book for, especially if they are a color client who receives multiple services in one appointment, clients find booking the appointment itself incredibly easy.

“With the men’s category growing so quickly, my goal was to get our male clients out of our styling stations and into barber chairs,” explains Timmons. “With the average men’s ticket running $40 to $50 and the average woman spending $200 to $300 per visit, it made sense from a business standpoint. I had grown tired of the spa and when I saw the gorgeous new 1922 By J.M. Keune line, I decided to create a complementary space for men within Salon Gloss.
