Will the biggest functional art project ever created come to Bristol?

Portal Unity has big ideas. They plan to create biggest functional art project the world has ever seen. And we are right behind them!

Video Window powers the first ever pOrtals. Two futuristic looking circular digital screens that are currently placed in the city centres of two different countries. Enabling people to pass by and see each other, as if they were transported to that other city.

The idea is to bring unity to us all in these difficult times, to allow us to connect, communicate and break down barriers.

Video Window has always worked to break down the barriers companies in communicating with remote employees, or offices in different locations. So we were delighted to be able to help with this project.

And now design students at UWE are bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to the project, looking at how we can make these portals more effective, greener and even more immersive.

We have been blown away by the ideas that are coming from UWE students in designing the next generation pOrtal.

We are proud to power Portal Unity’s first ever digital gateways, that allow people in different countries to see each other in real time.

And we got to thinking that Bristol, our hometown, should be the next city to host one of these amazing structures!

We’ve launched a competition with UWE students to design the next generation portal and they’ve come up with some amazing ideas to bring our Bristol’s character on the rear of the digital screen that connects you to another part of the world.

Competition to design a live digital “portal” for Bristol City Centre is hotting up!

The original Portal was conceived and built by the not-for-profit Benediktas Gylys Foundation. The portal is currently linking cities in 2 different countries in Europe and Bristol wants to be the third.

The idea being that this becomes the biggest functional art project ever created, allowing people all over the world to connect, communicate and unify as they pass the portal in their city centre.

We’ve teamed up with Students from UWE Bristol’s BSc and BA Product Design programs and challenged them to design a new Portal that’s bolder, brighter and more environmentally friendly than the live ones currently connecting people 24/7 in Lithuania and Poland.

And WOW just look at what they’ve come up with!

Designing a New Digital Portal for Bristol

UWE product design students have been tasked with designing the latest of the Portal Unity Networks vision to link cities across the globe and bring much needed unity to people and communities worldwide.

Video Window, who power the first ever Portal, currently linking two cities in Poland and Lithuania, decided to partner with UWE to bring this concept closer to reality for Bristol.

The Portal is futuristic with an incredible industrial design and a unique, large circular display, providing a truly immersive experience. Students have been asked to consider and design creative technical solutions and a Bristol themed visual identity for the Portal, with the winning team being offered the opportunity to visit the world’s first Portal which connects Lithuania and Poland.

Ringailė Papartytė, ED of Portal Cities said “This will become the largest artwork in the world - for the world, and we are excited to take inspiration from the students at UWE in reaching this goal”

Could Bristol be the Next City in a Futuristic Network of Digital Portals?

Video Window, the hybrid office specialists certainly think so. We’ve launched a competition with the Portal Unity Network to come up with a workable solution for Bristol to have its own Portal somewhere in the city centre.

UWE Product Design students are competing to come up with the design of the portal to reflect Bristol city and culture.

Since working with the Portal to power their design 24/7 we’ve been inspired by the Portal’s aim to unify people across the globe and we think that bringing the next Portal to Bristol would be fantastic.

Students look to the future by designing a new Bristol Portal

Second year students from UWE Bristol’s BSc and BA Product Design programmes have been challenged to design a new ‘Portal’ - an innovative and exciting digital window to another city – as part of a competition launched in partnership with video connection specialists, Video Window.

The winning team will have the opportunity to visit the world’s first Portal Unity Network which connects Lithuania and Poland.

The original Portal was conceived and built by the not-for-profit Benediktas Gylys Foundation. It’s futuristic with an incredible industrial design and a unique, large circular display, providing a truly immersive experience.
