I thought, "How hard can school marketing be?"

So, I put our school on Instagram and Facebook.
One of our teachers is good behind a camera.
I wrote frequent updates about our programs and activities.

Turns out, my message was only reaching our existing families.
They loved seeing photos of their kids building Lego robotics and gardening!
Pictures of happy students doing hands-on activities might have helped retention, but...
We got exactly zero information calls and zero requests for a school tour.
Same outcome even when I tried to boost some of these posts.

Like so many other things, social media marketing is a bit more complicated than it looks.
What do we always tell the students? "When you're stuck, raise your hand and ask for help."

I knew I had to find someone that knows how to fill our empty seats.
Fast-forward to today, we finally grew our enrollment and have a healthy waiting list.
As a school leader, it's part of my job to know when to ask for help, and where to go to get it.

This involves offering families something that the school down the road cannot or does not offer -a Unique Selling Proposition (USP).

A new charter had just opened its doors 3 miles to the west of us.

What we do is extremely different from them.

But our pre-K and kindergarten dropped for two consecutive years.

To begin with, make sure you let your ads run for at least three to five days after setting them live.

I know this is a tough thing to do, but you've got to let your ads marinate in Facebook's algorithm before making a decision.

We assume that the longer a school has been around, the more likely it is to stick around.

We assume that a school's age is proof of its strength and resilience.
We assume that older schools are more likely to survive over the long term.
Longevity is seen as both a trophy and a forecast.
But when we plotted closures by schools' lifespan, it looks more like a straight line.

Studying competition among schools reveals an 'Alice in Wonderland' effect; we keep running just to stay in place.
But to survive, do we really have to run faster and harder every year?
Here are four suggestions...
