🚀 LINUX KERNEL 7.3 IS COMING — AND PERFORMANCE IS GETTING A SERIOUS BOOST! 🐧🔥
Linux Kernel 7.3 is shaping up to be one of the most performance-focused releases yet, with improvements across filesystems, scheduling, memory management, latency, and CPU efficiency.
⚡ WHAT’S CHANGING?
🔹 Btrfs — Up to 5× Faster
Improvements to logging, fsync, extent tracking, direct I/O, plus the free-space cache moving from v1 → v2.
🔹 EXT4 — Faster I/O
Parallel direct I/O writes and allocator improvements, with Gen5 NVMe performance reported from 1.92M → 2.19M IOPS.
🔹 Scheduler — Up to 7× FPS Boost
A new single-runqueue EEVDF design aims to deliver smoother frame pacing, especially on older/low-end CPUs.
🔹 Memory — Up to 100×–500× Improvement
KSM lock times reportedly drop from 500ms+ → under 2ms, while zsmalloc contention fixes can provide up to 1.83× faster performance.
🔹 SMP Latency — Up to 90% Lower
P99 latency drops from around 17ms → 1.5ms, a major improvement for real-time workloads such as DPDK.
🔹 Hybrid CPU Optimization
Better P-core / E-core load balancing for Intel hybrid CPUs, including Alder Lake, Lunar Lake, and Panther Lake.
