About this Mosaic:
My inspiration comes primarily from nature and the rich biodiversity of flora and fauna in Puerto Rico. I’m also deeply influenced by archetypes, myths, and scientific concepts, using natural elements to create symbolic narratives that range from the personal to the universal.
Through my art, I aim to evoke curiosity and encourage personal interpretation. I want viewers to connect empathetically with nature, taking a moment to reflect on their surroundings and appreciate the often-overlooked beauty in everyday life.
Achiote is a very important plant in Puerto Rico, especially in our kitchen. Its seeds offer a striking red pigment and a subtly earthy flavor to our traditional dishes. However, there is also historical evidence that the indigenous people of Borinquen, the Tainos (Arawak), used this pigment in pottery and for body adornment .
Among all the dense tropical foliage, the achiote stands out. Imagine a lush palette of greens-light to dark- and suddenly, a spark of red breaks through the cool tones, disrupting the monochrome with vibrant energy.
In this piece, I used a vibrant red smalti to depict a sliced achiote and incorporated glass nuggets to represent the seeds from which the pigment and flavor are extracted. Filati adds a more refined texture, creating transitions between the rougher, larger piece of glass. These subtle details are an open invitation to look closer-to connect, to remember, and to rediscover the beauty that blooms quietly in the space we often overlook.
Congratulations, you read this far... 👏 see, it wasn't that hard.
