We put AI website builders to the test, asking them to design a site for a chair company. We gave them the same prompt and got three wildly different results.

All three builders — Dora AI, Framer, and Unicorn Platform— let you quickly lay the groundwork for a website or get a spark of inspiration. The quality of the generated designs will heavily depend on the complexity of your request. Sorry, "peach fuzz," but apparently, not everyone's familiar with you.

And the final product? That boils down to the skill of whoever's refining the AI's initial design.

If you're looking to brainstorm ideas and have a bit of fun along the way, these tools are definitely worth a shot. And yes, AI website builders significantly streamline the site creation process, but they can't entirely replace professional designers — not yet, anyway. They're great for rapid prototyping and whipping up simple sites like landing pages and one-pagers. But for complex, unique websites, we still recommend bringing in a seasoned designer. Last up in our AI website builder showdown (at least for now) is Dora. For $18 (at the time of testing), it showed a remarkably good understanding of our prompts compared to the other builders we tried.

Here's what stood out:
— quick generation of multiple design options, so you can pick and refine the one you like best;
— impressively accurate prompt interpretation;
— a great library of components to spark your creativity;
— the ability to tweak individual components on the page, much like in Framer.

The drawbacks:
— a very limited free version;
— questionable responsive design.

Dora is ideal for generating ideas and prototypes. If you're a business owner looking to quickly generate concepts to hand off to your designers, Dora can definitely speed up the development process. However, the generated screens still need refining, and customization comes at a cost. That's why Dora takes last place in our ranking.

Our second contender in the battle of the best AI website builders is Framer. To sum it up, Framer delivers solid block generation and lets you tweak anything that doesn’t quite hit the mark. Though, if you’re a design newbie, the interface might take some getting used to.

Here’s what’s good:
— a library of styles and components at your fingertips;
— a wide selection of design blocks, and even the option to start with a blank canvas;
— easy image handling, with built-in access to stock photos;
— micro-animation and state settings;
— automatic responsive design and dark mode generation.

The not-so-good:
— its prompt comprehension can be a bit hit-or-miss;
— the interface isn’t the most intuitive for first-timers.

Framer is a decent fit for startups and small businesses. It allows you to quickly create a basic website or landing page, but unlike Unicorn Platform, you’ll need some design chops to really make it shine.

We kicked off our AI website builder test-run with Unicorn Platform and, honestly, we were pretty impressed. Sure, it’s not going to win any landing page design awards just yet. But! It’s a solid choice for getting a basic site up and running fast. Just be prepared to fine-tune the details.

Here’s what we liked:
— super user-friendly interface, even if you’re not a tech whiz;
— a decent library of templates to choose from;
— plenty of text customization options;
— automatic responsive design across different devices;
— the ability to add and save custom styles for elements;
— a surprisingly feature-rich free plan.

And the downsides:
— limited flexibility when tweaking blocks and responsive layouts;
— no animation or effects settings.

Basically, Unicorn Platform is ideal if you need a quick and dirty website, MVP, or landing page, and you’re not exactly a web design guru.
