Accuracy can get > 85% on abstract, domain-specific questions compared to standard RAG (37%), by leveraging finetuning and iterative reasoning techniques.

We recently published a technical report on the AI Alliance blog, outlining our studies on advancing domain-specific Q&A systems.

Key findings:
- Fine-tuning the embedding model used in RAG's retrieval step significantly improves retrieval accuracy and answer quality, with higher gains than fine-tuning the generic model.
- Integrating iterative reasoning using the OODA (Observe-Orient-Decide-Act) loop yields the highest performance improvements, outperforming even fully fine-tuned RAG. (We continue to have exciting results with this technique. More on this later in our future posts!)
- These techniques enable AI systems to provide the depth and precision needed for expert-level decision-making across various domains, such as healthcare, finance, and industrial operations.

By leveraging Aitomatic's Industrial Agentic AI technology, the teams will develop a domain-specialist AI assistant that understands employee inquiries, provides accurate responses, and guides them through related procedures.

On April 2, the AI Alliance held its inaugural in-person workshop in San Francisco, uniting members from IBM, Meta, AITOMATIC, Inc., ServiceNow, and 30+ leading organizations to discuss Open Innovation's critical role in global AI adoption. The insights and discussions would shape the Alliance's strategic direction and impact moving forward.

Anthony Annunziata, Head of AI Open Innovation and the AI Alliance at IBM, set the stage by emphasizing the importance of openness in AI. Responding to NTIA's call for comments on open model weights was a significant step forward. He urged members to focus, stating: "What are the few things we can go all in on as the Alliance projects?"

Dr. Christopher Nguyen's talk revealed open-source AI as a crucial necessity for the $25 trillion industrial economy, with countries racing for "AI sovereignty" to secure their economic future. The AI Alliance is uniquely positioned to develop open, industry-specific foundation models, enabling cost-effective innovation and empowering enterprises across the AI stack. Intriguingly, emerging economies are the most optimistic about AI's potential, recognizing openness as a key to their economic survival.
