That $8 piece of wood isn’t an $8 product once you’ve transformed it.

And if you’re selling what you make, material cost alone should never determine your price.

Think about everything that happens between the blank piece of wood and the finished product:

Your idea.
Your design time.
Machine time.
Testing.
Finishing.
Consumables.
Packaging.
The occasional piece that doesn’t quite go according to plan. 😅

That was at 9:14 Saturday morning.

Coffee ready. ☕
Design ready.
Material ready.

Easy project.

He’d be done before 10.

Three minutes after pressing START:

**“Hmm… that doesn’t sound right.”**

Stop.

Check everything.

Start again.

Then he notices one tiny setting he forgot to change.

Fix it.

Start again.

Until…

**“WAIT. Why is it cutting THERE?!”**

🛑 Emergency stop.

Back to the computer.

🔥 THE $5 TEST THAT COULD SAVE YOUR $50 MATERIAL

One of the easiest ways to waste good material?

Testing your project on it first. 😬

Before you engrave, cut, or carve that beautiful piece of wood, grab some scrap and run a test first.

A few minutes of testing can help you catch:

✓ Wrong size or position
✓ Incorrect power & speed
✓ Too much burn or char
✓ Incorrect cutting depth
✓ A cut that doesn’t go all the way through
✓ CNC toolpath or dimension problems
✓ And yes… even that typo you noticed after pressing Start. 😅

The goal isn’t simply to ask, “Did it work?”

Look closely at the result. Adjust your settings. Then move on to the material you actually care about.
