Oil sticks finally brought these 8x10 panels together 💙💗💚

I love how the textured layers now look like pebbles in an old stone wall.

I love how some pieces become such an ongoing experiment /conversation and then all of the sudden they are on their own all grown up and ready to find new homes in the world 🥲

“Factory Floor no. 3,”
24x18 acrylic, mixed media fabric and paper scraps on canvas

This post is to show how much a painting can evolve over layers and layers of play, accident and purposeful manipulation.
Excavated paint and fragments of fabric and paper remnants from invisible women’s work are allowed non purposeful agency.

A lot of my recent work plays with the notion of what “women’s work” exactly is. And by that, I mean the invisible labor, the actual labor, the labor that is never taken seriously and instead labeled as craft or hobby or whimsy or the inevitable labor of motherhood. All of these forms of labor and creativity have been traditionally ignored and undermined, which doesn’t stop the creating and power of expression and the joy realized from the act of making things and being human in the world.

However, the rage of not being taken seriously, the rage of being subject to only traditional “women’s work” is channeled through in this series through the use of fabric scraps and pattern paper materials that challenge the notion of control and precision and exactness and perfection and holding everything together all the time.

Instead, these materials are incorporated into mixed media abstract works as a way to liberate the notion of what woman’s work has been and can be.

I can’t wait to show you more art on this theme at my upcoming show with ,

TEXTURE - I love it so much that I create layers and layers of it in my mixed media work - these 8x10s have evolved over and over the past several months - my studio that’s in the basement of an old auto parts garage inspires me to no end - the floors, the cracks, the stains - evidence of life lived and stories held in spaces used for decades 💛

Another one inspired by the kids’ slang but also an homage to the OG prof of “aura,” critical theorist par excellence, Walter Benjamin.

His essay, “Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” was the backbone of every literature department in the 2000s. I wonder what Walter (who tragically took his own life after capture crossing the mountains of Catalonia to escape the N***s) would think of the kids use of the word these days 🧐
Seems timely to discuss. ✌️
