Last night I had the honor of attending held by the at the in Oakland. As a recently minted book reader - always been a collector - it was a sensational night.

I couldn’t help but laugh and feel connected to my Nonnie when I picked up my name tag and both names were spelled incorrect 🤪

They were so embarrassed and offered to hand-write one. I insisted not and thought - as a publication designer a new writer on the scene - it would be more charming to corrected it with marks 😂

In 2014, I had the esteem honor of meeting a woman whom would come to be one of my dearest friends. In learning more about her, her global travels and advocacy in the arts, I discovered her father for the first time. Thaddeus needs no further introduction — in Pittsburgh he is already a legend in his own right. I was so enamored by their story I curated a design feature about them for a magazine I served as a , and for in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Please, if you are not already familiar with enjoy this read and how proud he is of all of his children. I will forever cherish sharing in conversation with him. Recognizing his voice out in public, no doubt with Khari Mosley close by, and taking a moment to say hello.

One of my most prized memories was when I attended an afternoon course he held at the Carnegie Museums : embodying the sounds of his favorite Jazz collections and him talking us through drawing freehand whatever we felt—now one of my favorite grounding practices.

Each time I would see him, he would remember me as a friend to his globe-trotting daughter. Over the decade I knew him, I was in such awe he would proudly continue, in his obvious strength, to dance with hand-sculpting them into what I compare respectively to the mighty flamingo.

In Pittsburgh, it is a fun survey to spot his works in the most inobvious of spaces. But, during the pandemic, I think one of the first times I genuinely felt joy was when I turned on SNL to try to laugh and spotted his works in the opening credits at Rockefeller Center, still standing, from an exhibition in NYC earlier that fall.

Thaddeus it is an honor to have known you. To get to know your children and to witness you get the recognitions you deserved long before they arrived. Thank you for everything you have contributed to how I hold space in my heart for Pittsburgh. Your perseverance and passion for the arts are not lost on me. Thank you for remembering me out in the wild of your very full life.
