Some battles don’t end when the deployment does. 🇺🇸

COMBAT VETERAN BUDDY CHECK.

Check on the Marine, Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or veteran who’s been a little too quiet lately.

Don’t just hit “like.” Call them. Text them. Show up.
You don’t need the perfect words. Sometimes all it takes is: “Brother, you good?”

We watched each other’s six downrange. That responsibility doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.

PTSD is real. Not all wounds are visible. No one fights alone.

Tag a brother or sister you haven’t checked on lately.

Make the buddy check.

I want you to check on your people, but also take a few minutes and do an internal self-check. Many times, we get so wrapped up in the world around us and helping others....we forget about ourselves. If you don't take care of yourself, eventually you will become what we called "combat ineffective" on active duty. Meaning, you no longer have the ability to help others because you are in such a bad state yourself.

Tom Skerritt enlisted in the U.S. Air Force before Hollywood knew his name, then spent decades playing military men, cops and commanders while quietly becoming one of America's most respected character actors. But the real surprise is how close he came to never becoming an actor at all.

Skerritt grew up in Detroit during the Depression.

After graduating high school in 1951, he enlisted in the Air Force.

He served for four years at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Texas as a classification specialist.

Then he used the GI Bill to pursue college.

Wayne State.

UCLA.

He originally leaned toward directing and writing.

Acting came almost accidentally.

In 1962, he landed his first film role in War Hunt.

Then Robert Altman cast him in MASH*.

Suddenly, Skerritt's career started moving.

But Hollywood didn't make him an overnight leading man.

He spent years taking whatever serious work came along.

Then came Alien.

Skerritt played Captain Dallas, the commander of the doomed Nostromo.

The film became a science-fiction landmark.

Then Top Gun.

Skerritt became Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf, the veteran instructor who knew exactly what combat aviation could cost.

The role worked because Skerritt wasn't pretending to understand military men.

He had actually worn the uniform.

His career kept expanding.

The Dead Zone.

Steel Magnolias.

A River Runs Through It.

Contact.

Then television gave him his biggest long-term role.

Picket Fences.

Skerritt played Sheriff Jimmy Brock and won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

But the most interesting part of his later life wasn't another acting role.

It was what he did for veterans.

In 2012, Skerritt co-founded the Red Badge Project, an organization designed to help veterans dealing with PTSD tell their stories and rebuild a sense of purpose.

The connection was personal.

Skerritt had gone from wearing an Air Force uniform to portraying soldiers and commanders on screen for decades.

Now he was helping veterans confront what happened after the uniform came off.

Tom Skerritt didn't become famous by pretending to understand war.

He had served.

He didn't simply play damaged veterans.

He eventually worked to help them.

And the actor who once enlisted before he knew what his life would become eventually turned that experience into a career that stretched across MASH*, Alien, Top Gun and Picket Fences.

Tom Skerritt went from Air Force enlisted man to Hollywood star.

Then he used the platform to help veterans tell the stories they couldn't carry alone.
