He became the FBI's most wanted hacker by breaking into 40 of the world's biggest companies. He never needed code. He just picked up the phone and asked.

He was born in Los Angeles in 1963, a kid who loved magic tricks. He wanted to be the Harry Houdini of hacking.
It started young. At 12, he talked a bus driver into telling him where to buy a ticket-punch machine, dug used transfer slips out of a dumpster behind the bus depot, and rode the buses around Los Angeles for free. No computer. Just a kid who knew what to say.
By 1992, Kevin was on the run, and he wanted a cell phone the FBI couldn't trace. For that, he needed the source code that ran the Motorola MicroTAC Ultra Lite, so he could change the number that identified the phone on the network. He didn't break in to get it. He called Motorola, won an employee's trust, and had them send the code straight to him. A single phone call, and one of the biggest tech companies handed over its own source code.
He went on to break into around 40 major corporations. Motorola, Nokia, IBM, Sun. Not for money. To prove he could.
For two and a half years, he lived on the run under fake names. One of them was Eric Weiss, the real name behind Harry Houdini. He moved through the phone networks unseen, the ghost in the wires that years later became the title of his book.
The FBI was hunting him. So he listened in on them. He had broken so deep into the phone system that he could hear the agents on his own case and be gone before they arrived. When they closed in, he cleared out and left a box of donuts in the fridge. The note said FBI DOUGHNUTS.
They caught him in 1995. The prosecutor told the judge he was so dangerous he could start a nuclear war by whistling into a payphone. The judge believed it, and Kevin spent eight months in solitary confinement. He never touched NORAD. Those systems were not even connected to the internet. The story stuck anyway.
He served five years. When he walked out, he was banned from touching a computer or a cell phone for three more.
Then he switched sides. He built Mitnick Security and became Chief Hacking Officer and part-owner of KnowBe4, the company that teaches people not to fall for the tricks he used. KnowBe4 later sold for 4.6 billion dollars.
He put X HACKER on his license plate.
Kevin Mitnick died in July 2023, at the age of 59, after fighting pancreatic cancer for more than a year.
