What is Phishing?

Phishing is the use of deceptive techniques to trick targets into giving access to important information and/or systems.
 

Why should I care?

Phishing attacks are extremely successful and very effective, targeting everyone from Fortune 500 companies and celebrities to you and your Grandma!  

How does it work?

Phishing targets the judgement skills of a person.  A phishing email often (not all the time) looks and sounds like a real email from a legitimate company or a personal contact.  They typically will request the user to reset their password, verify their account, or click a link, which begins the attack.  
 

How can I protect myself?

* Check for excessive grammatical errors in the email (errors in the body of the message, as well as in the sender email address

* Do not click links from any place you do not know/did not request information

* If uncertain about the email,DO NOT open it.  If it is a business or person you know call them and ask if they really sent it.

* Report phishing to [email protected] or if you are at work forward the email to your company's anti-phishing group to keep others safe.
