Description
What are some of the skills and strengths that “Nativer” has?
When I think about what works well for a team and what I have typically looked for in a candidate, there are four qualities:
Communication:
So not just being able to converse with and create tailored communication for a wide range of audiences, which is critical
But also, being kind – particularly when things are as challenging as they have been during the pandemic, where you have these super compressed timelines, many competing priorities, dependencies, and meetings – the work can become very stressful and challenging and then you combine all that with many different styles of work and personalities.
So, I think the people who have done well with managing these challenging dynamics have been great communicators, in the sense that they have maintained kindness in the face of adversity and helped cultivate a positive, safe, and supportive environment – which is reflected in their style of communication. And now that many of us have become part of a distributed virtual/remote workforce, communication is more important than ever.
Adaptability:
Adaptability is another key skill to have for all of the reasons I just mentioned
That’s being able to learn new ways of doing things, staying up-to-date on what we call ‘edge’ or novel methodologies, technologies, or solutions and continuously developing both domain and subject matter knowledge.
Adaptability is also being able to adapt to the resources that are available to you and the skills and levels of proficiencies within your team:
For example, you might be on a team where some folks use R, others use SAS, some of us use multiple languages, and multiple stakeholders might have different preferences or a budget for certain types of platforms or systems. So, say you have to build a dashboard or data viz, you might have to know how to do that not just with Tableau, R Shiny, Power BI, or ArcGIS and other technologies but perhaps you will have to learn how to build in all four and beyond.
Innovation:
The willingness to try new things and then taking it a step further to test and try and pilot those new things.
In practice, that means being an innovator, activist, or advocate when it comes to introducing new ideas, approaches, or technologies when there has been a long-standing status quo or there’s significant resistance to change.
Integration:
Creating opportunities to drive and organize cross-disciplinary interactions and knowledge exchange.
There’s this distinction between collaboration and integration, where collaboration is defined as working together but not sharing ownership of each of the individual efforts, and integration is the idea that all of us are working towards the same north star and there’s a sense of ownership for the sum of all individual efforts.
So being able to help lead or create a culture of integration and inclusivity across the workplace is an important skill.
In practice, from the software engineering world, that could be something like establishing and implementing interorganizational and cross-jurisdictional knowledge exchanges – so simply sharing information, rather than hoarding it, which is something that you might come across from time to time and can help change.

Creativity:
Taking the time to create a good first impression of a new idea, whether it’s a new dashboard, interactive data visualization, user interface, or infographic.
Putting a lot of effort into the initial design, mockup, or prototype and the overall user experience helps to draw a stark contrast between the current state and potential future or ideal state, and that helps get people excited about change.
