Happy Fat Tuesday, Metro Detroit! 🍩
Let me help you out real quick!
It's not "paczki." It's not "poczki." It's not "punch-key."
It's pączki. That little tail under the A matters. It's called a nasal vowel.
And please! DO NOT say "pączkis." One pączek, two pączki. It's already plural. Same with pierogi.
Say it wrong and you don't get anything! 😆
Now go enjoy your pączki, and say it right, Detroit.

Ahoy! 🚤

White Space Isn't Wasted Space

Cramming everything onto your website doesn't make it better.
It makes it overwhelming.

White space (empty space) actually increases comprehension by 20%.

It gives your content room to breathe. Guides the eye. Makes important things stand out.

The most expensive brands in the world? They use tons of white space.

Less is more. Let your design breathe. ⚓

People Don't Read, They Scan

Your website visitors read only 20% of the text on your page.
That's it. One-fifth.

The rest? They're scanning for:

→ Headlines
→ Bullet points
→ Bold text
→ Images
→ Buttons

If your website is walls of paragraphs, nobody's reading it.
Break it up. Make it scannable. Guide their eyes.
Design for skimmers, not scholars. ⚓

The Color Red Makes People Hungry

Ever notice how many restaurants use red in their branding?
McDonald's. KFC. Wendy's. Pizza Hut. In-N-Out.

It's not a coincidence.

Red increases heart rate and stimulates appetite. That's actual psychology at work.

Meanwhile, blue suppresses appetite (that's why almost no food brands use it).

Your brand colors aren't just aesthetic, they're affecting how people feel about your business.

Choose wisely. ⚓

My Newfoundland was literally bred to rescue fishermen from icy Atlantic waters. I was bred for... well, definitely not this. Different strengths, same snow day. Stay warm out there! 🐾❄️

Local Business Website Reality Check: The Numbers Don't Lie

I've been analyzing Michigan small business websites, and the data tells a fascinating story about where local businesses are investing their digital presence.

Here's what the landscape actually looks like:
Most Popular Website Platforms for Small Businesses:
🥇 WordPress - 43% (powers everything from simple sites to complex e-commerce)
🥈 Wix - 18% (drag-and-drop favorite for DIYers)
🥉 Squarespace - 16% (popular with creative professionals)
📊 Shopify - 11% (e-commerce focused)
📊 Custom Built - 7% (agencies and developers)
📊 GoDaddy Website Builder - 5% (quick and basic)

But here's where it gets interesting:
Platform choice matters less than what you DO with it. I've seen gorgeous custom sites that convert at 0.5% and simple WordPress sites that convert at 8%.

The Real Stats That Matter:
📉 75% of consumers judge a company's credibility based on website design (Stanford)
📉 88% of local business searches on mobile result in a call or visit within 24 hours (Google)
📉 Only 30% of small businesses have a mobile-optimized website (BrightLocal)
📉 57% of users won't recommend a business with a poorly designed mobile site (Google)
📉 53% of mobile users abandon sites that take longer than 3 seconds to load (Google)

What I'm seeing in Metro Detroit specifically:
⚓ Too many businesses on outdated WordPress themes from 2015-2018
⚓ Wix and Squarespace sites that look great but aren't optimized for local SEO
⚓ Beautiful designs with zero calls-to-action
⚓ Fast-loading sites with terrible mobile experiences
⚓ Perfect mobile experiences that take 8 seconds to load

The bottom line:
Your platform doesn't determine your success. Your strategy does.
Whether you're on WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or a custom build - what matters is: → Does it load fast?
→ Does it work on mobile?
→ Does it convert visitors into customers?
→ Does it reflect your brand accurately?
→ Can you (or someone) keep it updated?

I've helped Michigan businesses succeed on every platform. The magic isn't in the tool - it's in knowing how to use it.

Quick question: What platform is YOUR business website on?

And more importantly - is it actually working for you?

If you're not sure, that's probably your answer.

Is your website undead?

You know the ones I'm talking about—lurking on page 2 of Google, still featuring a "Happy Holidays 2019" blog post and team photos from people who don't even work there anymore.

I see them every week across Metro Detroit. Zombie websites that are technically "alive" but...

🧟 Last blog post: "Happy Holidays 2019!"
🧟 Design straight out of the early 2010s
🧟 "Flash Player Required" (seriously?)
🧟 Mobile version that's basically unusable
🧟 Stock photos of people pointing at whiteboards
🧟 "Under Construction" pages that have been under construction for 4 years
🧟 Contact forms that don't even work anymore

Here's the thing: Your website is often the first mate potential customers meet.

When they land on a zombie site, here's what they're thinking:

"If they can't keep their website updated, how will they handle MY project?" "Are they even still in business?" "Their competitors look way more professional..."
And then they sail away. To your competitor with the modern site.

What needs to happen:

⚓ Fresh content - Even quarterly updates show you're alive and active
⚓ Modern design - Clean, current, purposeful (not cluttered)
⚓ Mobile-first layout - Over 60% of traffic is mobile now
⚓ Clear navigation - Visitors should know where to go in 3 seconds
⚓ Working functionality - Forms that submit, links that work, pages that load
⚓ Updated messaging - Does your copy still reflect who you are TODAY?

Here's how Shrimp Boat brings your site back to life:

I don't just slap a fresh coat of paint on a rotting hull. I rebuild your vessel from the keel up:

→ Strategy first - I figure out what your site needs to DO for your business
→ Modern, clean design - Beautiful AND functional (no zombie templates)
→ Content that converts - Copy that speaks to your actual customers
→ Built for today's web - Fast, mobile-optimized, secure
→ Training & handoff - You'll know how to keep it fresh (or I can crew it for you)
Plus, I'm local to Michigan. Which means you get a partner who actually picks up the phone, not a support ticket queue.

Your website should be working FOR you 24/7, not scaring customers away.
Quick audit: When was YOUR last website update?

If you had to think about it for more than 3 seconds... it might be time to check for a pulse.

Ready to bring your site back to life? Let's chart a course together. ⚓
