Uncover Rolla

Uncover Rolla Discovering beauty through photography in Rolla, Missouri. This project was realized by Rachel Jung in early Spring 2013. Now she has the chance.

As an IT Project Manager by day and amateur photographer by night, she is looking for Rolla’s hidden charm that is waiting to be revealed. She’ll be carrying her Nikon D3000 with the standard 18-55mm lens along with a 55-200mm lens. She will also have her iPhone 12 with her at all times. Uncover Rolla will contain photos from in and around Rolla. The subjects will be based upon nature, architectur

e and culture found on a weekly basis as the photographer scouts out new content. Growing up as a Washington, Missourian on a small farm in the country, she appreciates the natural attraction of her surroundings. After moving back to Rolla, she has seen many opportunities that she has wanted to capture. She is looking forward to the adventure! Rachel is not a complete stranger to Rolla as she graduated from Missouri S&T with her MBA. Now back in Phelps County, she plans to explore and “uncover” the nearby treasures. On top of a hill overlooking Interstate 44 in Rolla sits a new, 117,000-square-foot building.

This building that's bigger than two football fields is the Protoplex, and it has an equally large goal — to be the center of an effort to bring manufacturing back to rural Missouri.

The Protoplex is filled with manufacturing equipment, labs and even a foundry. Missouri University of Science and Technology, the state and other partners intend it to bring a modern approach to manufacturing to the campus and the entire region by giving companies a space to try out new manufacturing processes before they build their own facilities when they outgrow rented space.

“The Protoplex shortens the path for innovation to validation to production to customer delivery,” said Dhiraj Pisal, who leads venture incubation efforts at Massachusetts-based Solvus Global.
