🏥 GOV. BESHEAR DISPUTES CONGRESSMAN BARR’S CLAIMS OVER RURAL HOSPITAL FUNDING

Gov. Andy Beshear is pushing back on statements from Congressman Andy Barr over the impact of federal Medicaid changes on Kentucky’s rural hospitals.

In a letter released Monday, Beshear cited Kentucky Hospital Association estimates that 35 rural hospitals are at risk and said Kentucky could lose at least $21 billion in Medicaid funding, with an estimated 250,000 residents potentially losing coverage.

Beshear also disputed Barr’s statements about Kentucky’s $212.9 million Rural Health Transformation Program, saying federal guidelines do not allow the state to simply use that funding to cover struggling hospital operations.

The governor called on Barr to support changes addressing the Medicaid reductions. Barr has previously questioned the hospital-closure estimates and the administration’s characterization of the federal legislation.

🚔🏫 MAGOFFIN COUNTY SCHOOLS POLICE DEPARTMENT NOW FULLY OPERATIONAL

The Magoffin County Board of Education says the Magoffin County Schools Police Department is now fully operational, marking the district’s transition to its own school-based police force.

The district thanked the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office and City of Salyersville for previously helping provide law enforcement services to local schools.

District officials said the new department will focus on school safety while building relationships with students, staff, families and the community.

🚔⚠️ WILLIAMSPORT MAN CHARGED AFTER PARK FIGHT, ALLEGED STABBING IN MAGOFFIN ⚠️🚔

A Williamsport man is facing multiple charges after a reported fight and stabbing at Ramey Memorial Park.

According to the complaint warrant, Matthew Burleson allegedly became involved in a fist fight before pulling a knife. Deputies allege a 17-year-old who attempted to break up the fight was stabbed in the hand.

The warrant states a handgun later fell from Burleson’s clothing. Witnesses alleged Burleson then followed three people as they ran toward a footbridge, threatened to kill them and repeatedly attempted to fire the gun, but it did not discharge.

Burleson was charged with:

• Assault, 2nd Degree
• Wanton Endangerment, 1st Degree (3 counts)
• Terroristic Threatening, 3rd Degree (3 counts)

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

🧵🎡 MAGOFFIN COUNTY FOUNDERS DAY KICKS OFF WEDNESDAY

The 2026 Magoffin County Founders Day celebration gets underway Wednesday evening in Salyersville with the carnival, opening ceremony and pageants.

The Fun Time Family Amusements Carnival will run from 5 to 10 p.m. at Salyersville City Park. The opening ceremony begins at 6 p.m. at Pioneer Village, followed by the Baby Contest at 6:45 p.m. and the Mrs./Ms. Magoffin Pageant at 8 p.m.

This year’s Founders Day honorees include Magoffin County Quilt Guilds and Homemakers, MCHS students and staff who constructed the barn quilts, and Magoffin County Girl Scout Troop 2954.

Carnival hours continue Thursday from 5-10 p.m., Friday from 2-11 p.m. and Saturday from noon-11 p.m.

🥵 HEAT INDEX COULD TOP 100 DEGREES ACROSS EASTERN KENTUCKY THIS WEEK

Eastern Kentucky is facing several days of dangerous heat, with heat index values expected to approach 100 degrees Tuesday and likely exceed 100 in many locations Wednesday through Friday.

The heat is expected to peak Wednesday and Thursday. Thunderstorms are also possible at times Friday through Sunday.

Residents should stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and check on those especially vulnerable to extreme heat.

Herald Whitaker Middle School has released its September schedule, with a busy month of athletics, school events and spirit activities ahead.

Highlights include no school Sept. 4 for Founders Day events and Sept. 7 for Labor Day, Homecoming Week beginning Sept. 13, the Homecoming Game on Sept. 19, and National GEAR UP Week beginning Sept. 20.

The calendar also includes Lady Hornets basketball, Hornets football, picture day and academic team events throughout the month.

🛣️ GOV. BESHEAR CUTS RIBBON ON WOLFE COUNTY MOUNTAIN PARKWAY EXPANSION

Gov. Andy Beshear joined former Gov. Steve Beshear and local, state and federal officials Monday to mark completion of the Wolfe County segment of the Mountain Parkway Expansion.

The 11-mile project stretches from near Campton to just west of Helechawa and completes 32 continuous miles of four-lane Mountain Parkway between Campton and Salyersville. The nearly $100 million project also reconstructed the KY 191/Campton and KY 1010/Hazel Green interchanges.

One major segment remains. Construction is underway on the 13-mile Magoffin-Floyd extension that will connect Salyersville to KY 114 near Prestonsburg, with completion currently scheduled for 2032.
