Before you commit to life as a remote developer, it’s important to consider what it takes to be successful in the field. Aside from the relevant hard skills, there are certain qualities that will help to ensure a successful career as a remote developer. These include:

# Discipline

Without the structure of office life, it’s up to you to set your own schedule and make sure you get things done. It’s easy to get carried away with the flexibility of remote work, and the lines between work and private life can become blurred. You’ll need to exercise a certain amount of discipline when it comes to structuring your day, setting regular working hours, and resisting the temptation to put certain projects to the side in favor of “life admin”.

# Excellent communication

Communication is crucial for any job, and it becomes even more important when working remotely. In the absence of face-to-face interactions, you’ll need to make sure that your employer, clients, or colleagues can easily get in touch with you via email, instant messaging, or video call—you can’t just go off the grid for days on end. As a remote worker, it’s important to show that you’re just as reliable as you would be in-house; you need to be contactable, responsive, and communicative about the status of what you’re working on.

# Time-management

One of the major perks of working remotely is the autonomy it affords you—but with autonomy comes responsibility. You’ll need to prioritize your workload, set your own deadlines, and ensure that you’re managing your time effectively. If you’re naturally organized, this won’t be too far removed from how you usually work; you’ll just need to make sure you’re allocating enough focus time within your flexible schedule.

# Self-motivation

As a remote worker, you won’t be surrounded by your teammates—at least not physically—and that can take its toll on your motivation. Even if you’re working on collective projects, it’s easy to feel isolated and detached from the wider goal, which can make it difficult to get things done. If you want to be a productive and happy remote worker, you’ll need to approach it with a great deal of self-motivation.

Hello! 👋

We published our first case study on how we helped a skilled developer Ivan to get a high-paying remote job with a US tech company in 2 weeks. 🤩

“The IT job market in the U.S. is peculiar and it’s easy to stay unnoticed: big companies don’t usually work with lone employees, and small ones like startups prefer to hire someone they already know.”

This is the story of a skilled developer who overcame the recruitment struggles and got a dream job.

Pet project will boost your chances of getting a job offer.

Such a project can be anything — an algorithm analyzing the words in the statements of politicians, a robot that brings you your iPhone or a smart home on a Raspberry Pi.

The main point is to make it publicly available info about how the process is going or what is new in the project. And of course, it would be nice if this project could underscore your expertise in a segment where you are looking for a job.

If you are lucky enough, you will have viewers and commenters inspiring you to continue the story. But there is another side effect of such a project (and blog). When you are asked at the initial interview why are you interested in this particular company or technology, you have something to show the recruiting manager.

There are very few people who do pet projects, so you will stand out from the crowd.

It may seem obvious, but we would like to go through the points why developers are curious about working in international companies.

1. US companies offer higher salaries than home country employers.

Of course, money is the primary reason for developers to work for international companies and get income in dollars. With Insquad we are talking about a relative income increase of 40% in comparison with home rates.

2. For developers this is a great opportunity to work with great minds in the world's best companies.

Developers value flexibility and opportunities to learn at work. It is appealing if the employer makes it easy to find experts within the company.

3. Take advantage of global networking opportunities

Accepting a role in another country will help you to establish a network of valuable contacts. This will help you stay abreast of the latest developments in your field as you progress your career, especially as your overseas role is in a more developed market.

4. Broaden horizons

Making the decision to work with foreigners forces you to step outside your comfort zone, which opens up opportunities to develop new skills and have new experiences. Additionally, working with

5. Remote work

Some specialist would like to travel and work from a laptop. Maybe you want to go, for example, to Thailand and work for an American boss from there? With Insquad it’s possible

6. Future perspectives

Doesn’t matter where you plan to work further, but any sort of international experience (even remote one) enhances your future opportunities. Overseas experience on your CV will give you a valuable competitive advantage.

Experience as a software developer in Google will propel your career in a tech world.

Starting a career in Google or Facebook is like joining car manufacturing plant. You do mechanical and routine tasks for quite some time before getting any real responsible jobs. And many people chose to do so as it is a career defining experience.

Not only you get the best practices in the tech segment, but more importantly (for your career), you get the right to put the tech giant in your resume. Many startups would welcome developers with such experience, so your value will grow.

Getting a job at Google or Facebook is a challenge as competition is tough, but very much advisable. And entry-level positions tend to be much easier to get into.

The difference between employment in a company and in a startup
The company is a startup that has grown and moved into a stable stage. It has already built most of the processes, has its own rules, technologies and approaches to work.

When hiring, the company will look for an employee who can integrate into the existing system and work in it for a long time. Because of this, a lot of attention is paid to communication and teamwork skills at the interview.

Startup is a completely different setting— a constant search for new solutions, approaches, rules and methods. The main task of a startup is to develop a business model or a product that fits the market in short time. This means that everyone in a startup will be interested in your ability to solve problems and work in conditions of frequent priority changes.

Five essential steps to find a job in the USA.

1. Try to make a pet project as it allows you to experiment and learn new cool stuff. It will also help if you focus on technologies that are used by your target companies. And don't forget to talk about it in blogs - it will help you feel yourself more confident at interviews.

3. Use all available platforms for job search: Linkedin, job boards, communities, etc. Referrals are also a powerful job search tool - nearly 80% of recruiters noted referrals as the best way for a quality hire.

4. Get yourself ready for the interview. You will have only one chance for make first impression, so it won't hurt to practice – mock interviews are a great way to do so.

❗️ Many recruiting managers do a quick scan of your resume to assess its length and usually they are reluctant to read anything beyond first page. So make sure that it is easy for them to see your qualifications and all other relevant information in a concise 1-page format.
👉 Always put your skills and the most relevant experience to the top of CV. This approach will give you more chances to get through initial screening and get to an interview.
