While World Environment Day was yesterday, our team was busy spending the day exactly where they wanted to be — outdoors and contributing directly to environmental stewardship efforts in Costa Rica.

This week, Jessy, Elke, and Kevin participated in a coastal and park cleanup effort in and around Corcovado National Park, helping remove debris and protect one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.

Experiences like these are an important reminder that conservation happens at every scale — from large environmental initiatives to individual actions that help preserve the ecosystems around us.

At Hammerhead Technology, our work in conservation technology is rooted in supporting wildlife, ecosystems, and the communities working to protect them. Whether through environmental monitoring, wildlife reporting, conservation dashboards, or public engagement tools, we’re proud to contribute to projects focused on protecting the natural world.

Sometimes the best way to celebrate the environment is simply to show up and help take care of it.

Red Fred is very excited about the new signs on SanCap Road!

The long stretch of pavement that connects Sanibel and Captiva cuts through some of the most wild, undeveloped parts of the islands. As a result, collisions with wildlife are common here, right near our own campus.

We regularly admit patients that were hit by a car less than a minute from our hospital. We’re hoping these signs change that.

Red Fred (pictured) is an eastern indigo snake, a nonvenomous species that travels thousands of acres in the search for mates and food. Because of this far-ranging behavior, indigoes are frequently killed while crossing roads. The species has been extirpated from Sanibel and Captiva, meaning they are locally extinct, and researchers believe our roadways played a big part.

The loss of indigoes from Sanibel and Captiva was a loss for our ecosystem. These “Lords of the Forest,” as their Latin name translates, are apex predators who control the food web. They directly contribute to ecosystem health and the balance of biodiversity.

We’re looking forward to seeing the impact made by these new Wildlife Corridor signs. They have the potential to protect other species that regularly cross roads, like turtles looking for nesting grounds, low-flying owls, and hunting bobcats.

We’re excited to see the continued expansion of wildlife protection efforts across Sanibel through data-driven conservation planning.

Hammerhead Technology designed and built the The City of Sanibel, Florida's Wildlife Mortality Monitoring Dashboard in partnership with the City’s Natural Resources Department to help transform wildlife incident data into actionable spatial insights.

The dashboard supports analysis and visualization of wildlife-vehicle conflict trends across the island, helping inform mitigation efforts such as strategic wildlife awareness sign placement in high-conflict areas.

This project reflects the power of conservation technology to support informed decision-making, strengthen public awareness, and help protect vulnerable wildlife species through accessible, data-driven tools.

We were honored to take part in Leadership Sanibel-Captiva’s Resiliency & Recovery Day hosted by the Charitable Foundation of the Islands

Corrie Presland-Byrne had the opportunity to share the vision behind the Community Health Dashboard — a collaborative initiative focused on helping Sanibel and Captiva make more informed, data-driven decisions for long-term resilience, adaptation, and community wellbeing.

The day brought together leaders from across the islands to discuss infrastructure, emergency response, environmental stewardship, economic vitality, and the future of our community. We’re grateful to be part of these conversations and to contribute technology that supports transparency, accessibility, and stronger communities.

A huge thank you to CFI, the Leadership Sanibel-Captiva program, and all of the local leaders and organizations who continue to invest in the future of our islands.

At Hammerhead Technology, we believe technology should serve the greater good — and it’s exciting to see collaboration, conservation, and community resilience coming together in meaningful ways.
