A few local newspapers in the Tri-Lakes area officially shut down today.

Stone County, Taney County, Barry County, and the surrounding communities all lost publications that businesses have advertised in for years.

If your business had an ad running there, that channel is just gone.

And if that was one of your main ways of getting found, the question becomes: now what?

This isn't really about one newspaper.

It's about what happens any time your visibility depends on something you don't actually control. A platform's algorithm changes. A directory site gets sold and rebuilt. A print publication doubles its ad rates overnight and the spot you've run for years isn't in the budget anymore.

None of that is up to you, and none of it comes with a warning.

Here's the distinction that matters: rented visibility versus owned visibility.

Rented is anywhere you're a guest. A newspaper ad, a billboard, a social media following, a directory listing. You're borrowing space or an audience, on someone else's terms.

Owned is the stuff nobody can pull out from under you. Your website, your email list, your customer database, your CRM.

Even your Facebook and Google Business Profile isn't fully yours, technically. Google and Facebook can suspend or remove a listing or page at any time, for reasons entirely out of your hands. You just don't realize it's rented until the day it's gone.

There's another piece to this, too.

Businesses that lean only on traditional channels like newspapers and magazines are often missing an entire generation, or two, of buying power. Those generations aren't picking up a paper, they're searching, and increasingly, they're asking AI instead of searching at all.

Businesses building their owned presence now are getting a head start. Businesses that don't are going to be playing catch-up later.

This isn't about picking one over the other. Traditional print marketing still works great alongside digital, when the two are actually built to work together.

Think about a business card sized ad in the paper, or your name on a billboard along a winding highway. Neither one usually gets someone to immediately call you on the spot. Building that kind of trust in a single square ad is hard, especially with how much marketing noise people deal with these days.

What both are really doing is planting a seed. Someone sees your name, remembers it, and looks you up later when they're ready to decide.

That only works if there's something for them to find.

And honestly, if your website wasn't ready to catch and convert that search before, the ad was probably underperforming already, it just hadn't been put to the test.

Now those papers are gone, and these likely aren't the last ones we'll see close as we get closer to 2030. It's part of a bigger shift, not a one time loss.

Here's the part most business owners are missing. It's not just print disappearing. The way people search is changing too. The search isn't guaranteed to even be a traditional search anymore. Google's recent shifts mean more of those queries get answered directly inside Google's AI Overviews, without the person ever clicking through to a website.

On top of that, more people are skipping search altogether and going straight to AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity to ask their questions. If you're not visible in either of those, or your site isn't built in a way AI can actually read and recommend, that person never finds you.

Print can create the moment. Digital, and specifically what you own, is what has to be ready to catch it.

This is exactly why "just do one thing really well" doesn't cut it anymore.

You need a full marketing plan, several channels working together, with something you actually own underneath all of it, so no single disruption can take your visibility down with it.

So ask yourself: if that newspaper was part of your plan, where does that leave you right now?

And bigger picture, if any one of your channels disappeared tomorrow, do you actually have something owned backing you up?

Let me know where your business stands on this, and if there's a gap, let's talk through it.

New website is live for Lake Hills Mowing LLC 💻

This project was all about giving them a clean, professional online presence they can confidently send people to.

We built out a simple 3-page site that:
▪️Clearly lays out their services
▪️Makes it easy for customers to reach out
▪️Positions them as a trustworthy local business

We also set up and optimized their Google Business Profile so they can start showing up in local map searches.

A solid foundation = more opportunities when people are actively looking.

Check it out: https://lakehillsmowing.com/

Quick reminder for small business owners:
If someone looks you up and can’t quickly understand what you do or how to contact you… you’re probably losing that lead.

We wrapped up a new logo for Lake Hills Mowing LLC a couple weeks ago. 🌱

They’re based out of Lampe, Missouri and serve the Stone County area with mowing, mulch installation, river rock installation, and general landscaping services.

The goal with this logo was simple:
Create something that actually represents who they are and where they work.

So we built it around:
▪️The hills + lawn striping to reflect their core services
▪️The lake element to tie into the Table Rock Lake area
▪️A clean, modern look that’s easy to recognize and remember

Nothing overcomplicated—just a strong, local brand that fits the business.

Always fun bringing a brand like this to life 🤝

If you’re a local service business:
Your logo doesn’t need to be flashy… it just needs to make sense and build trust at a glance.
