Did you know there’s a biological metamorphosis that happens when a woman becomes pregnant? It’s called fetal microchimerism, and it’s the scientific proof that mothers are never truly the same person they were before.
From as early as four weeks, a bridge is built. Cells from the baby travel across the placenta, weaving themselves into the mother’s body where they reside in places like her heart, lungs, liver, and even her brain.
Science tells us these cells don’t just visit; they make a home. They become a part of our physical architecture.
So even if the flight was shorter than I dreamed, the transformation is complete. My DNA has been rewritten. My heart carries a literal, cellular memory of them.
And it’s a mutual cycle. Cells from our bodies transfer to them, which is why it feels like a piece of us is always missing.
To anyone navigating this space: I hope you find comfort in knowing you aren’t just carrying a memory. You are a living sanctuary for the cells of the one(s) you love.
There is a very personal and persistent hope in knowing that wherever we go, they are there too.
