This Week in Tech History

In July 1994, Jeff Bezos founded Amazon, initially just an online bookstore run out of his garage in Bellevue, Washington. Back then, the idea of buying books online sounded almost strange. Who would trust typing in their credit card number online?

But Bezos had a vision: the internet was about to explode, and books were only the beginning. He named it Amazon after the world’s largest river, because he wanted to build the world’s largest online marketplace.

Fast forward three decades, and Amazon has reshaped the way we shop, read, work, and even power the internet. What started with books grew into selling “everything from A to Z” (ever notice the arrow in the Amazon logo?). Then came Prime, Kindle, Alexa, and even Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud backbone behind millions of businesses, websites, and apps.
For small businesses, Amazon changed the rules of the game by giving anyone a global storefront. For consumers, it sets the standard for fast shipping, easy returns, and a digital-first shopping experience. Love it or hate it, Amazon didn’t just change retail—it transformed the digital economy.

👉 Fun fact: The very first book sold on Amazon was Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies by Douglas Hofstadter. Not exactly a bestseller title, but it made history.
Would you have guessed that a garage startup for books would one day reshape how the world shops and how the internet runs?

A software renewal notice can quietly turn into a major business decision.

The price increases. A familiar plan disappears. A permanent license becomes a subscription. The deadline arrives before anyone has had time to evaluate the consequences properly.

The difficult part is rarely comparing monthly prices. It is understanding everything connected to the software, including historical data, integrations, employee workflows, compliance requirements, and specialized equipment that may have no modern alternative.
Paying more may be the right decision. Migrating may be the better option. In some situations, safely preserving a legacy system is the only realistic path.

The dangerous choice is the one made under pressure without knowing the full cost, risk, and disruption involved.

Read the article to learn how to approach a changing software agreement before the deadline removes your ability to choose carefully.

The family WiFi war usually starts the same way.

Someone is streaming.
Someone is gaming.
Someone is on a work call.
Someone is blaming everyone else.

But in most homes, slow WiFi is not caused by one person. It is usually caused by too many connected devices, an older router, weak signal areas, poor router placement, or background updates quietly using the connection.

When the network is set up the right way, everything at home gets calmer.

Work calls stop freezing.
Movies stop buffering.
Kids can do homework without fighting the internet.
Printers, cameras, smart TVs, and devices start behaving better.
The problem usually is not your family. It is the setup.

At Bob’s Computer Service, we help families in Springfield MA, West Springfield, and the surrounding area fix WiFi problems the practical way.

Better WiFi means less stress at home.

Family WiFi problems? The cause usually isn't your family, it's the setup. Bob's Computer Service fixes slow WiFi in Springfield MA and West Springfield.

This Week in Tech History
On July 4, 1996, Hotmail launched, giving the world its first widely accessible, free web-based email service.
Before Hotmail, most people had email accounts tied to their Internet Service Provider (ISP), meaning if you switched providers, you lost your email address. Hotmail changed everything by offering users an address that could be accessed anywhere, from any computer, with just a web browser.
It was revolutionary at the time — the idea that your messages weren’t locked to one computer or company gave people true freedom of communication. Within just a year and a half, Hotmail had over 8.5 million users, which caught Microsoft’s attention. They bought it in 1997 for $400 million and rebranded it as MSN Hotmail, later evolving into what we know today as Outlook dot com.

Hotmail shaped the way we all think about email: mobile, universal, and always available. Without it, the concept of cloud-based communication, from Gmail to Office 365 to today’s mobile-first apps, might have taken much longer to catch on.

💡 Did you know? Hotmail initially tried to sneak its launch date in on July 4th to symbolize “freedom” from ISP-based email. Clever marketing move!
👉 Do you remember your first Hotmail email address?

The most dangerous scams do not always sound like scams.

They can sound like a calm phone call from your bank, a quick text from a coworker, or a familiar message from someone claiming to be a family member.

That is what makes modern scams so effective. They begin with a small, reasonable request and slowly turn a normal conversation into an expensive mistake.

Before sending money, changing payment information, sharing an account detail, or reading someone a security code, stop and verify the request using a phone number or contact method you already trust.

A few extra minutes of caution could protect your business, your savings, and your peace of mind.

Read the full article to learn how these scams work and the simple rules that can help protect your home or business.

Modern scams feel like normal conversations, and that is exactly the trick. Learn how the channel switch works and the simple rules that stop costly mistakes.

This Week in Tech History

Windows 98 was released on June 25, 1998

In the late 1990s, Microsoft introduced Windows 98, a follow-up to Windows 95 that brought some of the most significant upgrades in PC history. It wasn’t just a new coat of paint, it was the first version truly built for the Internet era.

Windows 98 introduced the FAT32 file system for larger hard drives, improved USB support (ending endless restarts), and tightly integrated Internet Explorer 4.0 into the desktop. For many of us, it was the first time the “Start” button became second nature, and features like Plug and Play made setting up printers, scanners, and digital cameras much less painful.
Sure, it had its quirks (and the infamous “Blue Screen of Death” demo crash at launch still makes the rounds online), but Windows 98 helped shape how we work and play today. It bridged the gap between the early Internet and the modern connected world, paving the way for XP, Windows 7, and everything that followed.

💡 Did you know? Bill Gates’ big live demo of Windows 98 famously froze and crashed right on stage in front of thousands of people. Instead of being a disaster, it actually made headlines, and gave Windows 98 even more attention!

What are your memories of Windows 98? Was it your first operating system, or did you upgrade from 95?

Your WiFi password may be shared with more people than you realize.

Employees know it. Former employees may still have it saved. Contractors have used it. Visitors may have received it years ago. Meanwhile, that same network could also contain your business computers, printers, security cameras, and sensitive information.

One shared password might feel convenient, but convenience can quietly become a serious security risk.

A safer business network keeps employees, guests, and office equipment properly separated. Guests can still access the internet, but they cannot reach the systems your business depends on.

If your WiFi password is written on a whiteboard, shared with every visitor, or has not changed in years, it may be time for a professional network review.
Read the full article to learn what may be happening behind the scenes and how to protect your business.

The password that quietly spreads to staff, guests, and former employees is a hidden risk for Springfield, MA businesses. Learn how to fix it the right way.
