Autism is simply a different 'way of being' - one that not everyone gets to experience!

You can say it's all about perspective, but neurodiverse people view the world in such unique ways that a lot people will never be able to experience themselves. That is pretty darn special!

We want to close out Autism and Neurodiversity Awareness Month with this quote from author Sonya Loftis in "Imagining Autism". We hope this month has been one full of time spent appreciating yourself and all your brain can do!

Neurodivergent brains are unique brains! 🧠

People with autism often have a lot of short-range connections in their brain rather than long-range ones. This means more connections are made with every thought, so their 'train of thought' may take a lot more stops and turns along the way.

This type of rapid fire thinking can create such powerful outcomes! It can improve creativity, lead to quick problem-solving, allow you to be hyper-focused on something and help you be very detail oriented. Not everyone has the ability to have their brain working so fast!

Is there a single right way to communicate? No way!

Everyone communicates in their own way. We are curious, what works best for you?

Communication is sometimes a sensitive topic for neurodiverse folks because it can be challenging to keep up with all of the different ways people convey what they are thinking. Some lean more towards nonverbal communication, while others are very outspoken and use more verbal methods.

We wanted to talk about this specifically this month because of its sensitive nature. Just because someone may not communicate in a similar way, doesn't mean they don't have anything to say!

Welcome to a very special month! April is Autism and Neurodiversity Awareness Month 🤩

This time is a way to recognize all the things that make people different - and celebrate those! While being neurodiverse is part of your identity, that doesn't mean it has to be your whole identity. We hope to spend this month looking past the surface level and appreciating the uniqueness lives in all of us!

We strive for our online space to be one that is welcoming and supportive. Feel free to share any experiences or personal celebrations with us if you feel so inclined!

Be on the lookout for more interesting content in the upcoming weeks 👍

Language can be so impactful 🗣️ The words we use to describe ourselves should reflect how we want to be seen by the outside world too. We are all in charge of our own story, and you get to chose which words are used to tell it!! What kind of words do you use and why?

A quote to think about:
"Language can influence the way we "think about disabled ppl as a cultural minority group, and the way our society regards, values and disvalues anyone who is different" ~Imagining Autism (Sonya Loftis, 2015, p.2)

People can be cautious of things they don't understand. Advocating can help educate them on other styles of life and why people think differently - and also why that is so unique and important!

Biodiversity of an ecosystem is so important to its success! For ecosystems, the term highlights the importance of having a varied group of species. The more biodiversity they have, the more able they are to adapt to changes and are overall more stable.

For humans, we ARE neurodiverse - each with our own way of functioning and thinking. This is important because it can help us as a society to be sustainable and to thrive! Without our differences we would not be able to survive…

Neurodiversity should never be something that divides us! It is not meant to be a diagnosis. The ‘us VS them’ narrative is one that we hope to avoid. This mindset can be so negative!

While it is a great word, its goal is not to be a label that defines a person’s identity. Instead, neurodiversity is meant to celebrate the differences between human minds, not put us into groups.

🟣Neurodiversity was first coined by Judy Singer in the 1990s🟣

Singer is an Australian sociologist. She focuses first on the definition of DIVERSITY: "a measurement of the degree of variability of a given variable in a given population or place"

Neurodiversity is a political term "to argue for the importance of including all neurotypes for a thriving human society." It was inspired by the Autistic Self-Advocacy Movement that was forming at the time.

Neurodiversity! This idea recognizes that every person's brain is different. Billions of connections in the human brain make it impossible for them to all be the same 🧠

Here with Neurodiverse Humans, we want to celebrate what makes each of us unique! Your brain doesn't function the same as anyone else's and that is so SPECIAL! However your brain works, be proud of how it gets you through everyday.

Quote:
Theo Smith and Amanda Kirby discuss in their book, "Neurodiversity at Work", how this term highlights all of the distinctive ways that our brain are individually ours. No other person in the world has a brain that is connected the same way as your own. Now that is something to rejoice about!!
