In Russia, Telegram started working without a VPN again. However, not at all and not everywhere.
Telegram has now updated the protocol. After the update, the messenger started masking its traffic — it looks like the connection is not coming from Russia. The network sees some kind of incomprehensible data stream and just doesn't understand that it needs to be blocked. In fact, the developers have sewn lock bypass directly into the application.
The Telegram messenger has always been quite centralized and its blocking has been quite simple. What has changed now is that blocking bypass technologies are being used: the traffic that Telegram transmits is disguised as regular traffic. The messenger does this by itself for the users.
