Certified Onsite Tech is now closed. I've accepted a job at Tillamook Family Counseling Center as their new IT Manager. I've been their back up tech for five years and it's a good fit. I'm happy to be doing something new still using the skills I learned after 10 years working for my self in personal computer repairs. Thank you to all my wonderful customers. Some of you are like family. We have some great people in Tillamook County! Say HI if you see me in town. Thank you all!

Humble beginnings. Opening the shop six years ago today, I had no idea of the knowledge, challenges, and rewards this job would bring. Thank you to my wonderful customers and staff, I couldn't have done it without you!

Each week, I'm getting customers into the shop who have been scammed into letting strangers REMOTE into their computer to "FIX" the problem. They are seeing pop ups on their screen like the ones posted and getting scared into calling the number. DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER! DO NOT LET THEM REMOTE INTO YOUR COMPUTER. Turn your computer off. If you get a call from "Microsoft", tell them, "There's a problem with my computer? I'll let my son know. He's a computer tech, he'll fix it when he gets home." Then HANG UP!

Please read the attached article for great advise. Thank you Martin Kadansky.

Tech Tip:
Don't be fooled by the caller ID you see on your phone, because scammers can easily spoof company names like "Comcast" or "Microsoft" in their outgoing calls. Don't be impressed, or scared, by the fact that the caller has your real name, address and phone number. Such information used to be in the phone book; now it's publicly available online.

How to protect yourself from Computer scams:
The first step is simply being aware that these scams exist!
“Microsoft” will never call you telling you that your PC is infected.
Never allow strangers to connect (remote in) to your PC.
Do not give any credit card info to somebody claiming to be from “Microsoft”.
If in doubt, shut down your computer and hang up the phone.
Tips to best protect yourself:
Keep Windows updates turned on and set them to automatically update.
Use a modern secure browser like Chrome.
Update any 3rd party plugins. (Java/Adobe Reader/Flash player)
